I Want My Own Pace Clock. Thoughts On Finis Underwater 2-Digit Clock Please

I want my own digital clock. A lot of pools I swim at don’t have a digital clock. So I’d like to just have my own to bring. I was thinking of this one:

Anyone have any experience with it? Seems perfect for me. I don’t need more than seconds. I’m a pretty reliable swimmer, so I really just need the seconds.

I really lust after this one: http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/12118.htm
but it seems excessive (and not waterPROOF).

does it reset when you touch it, like the walls in competition meets??

Here’s a buy it now on ebay for only $250.

That should make your decision easy!

How does it attach to the wall? I had one that had suction cups and a counter, and you hit it to count the laps. It was always falling off. It also had a wall-mount type thing but it didn’t fit with my pool. It was such a constant hassle. It was cheaper than this one so this product may be much better, but you may want to look into the “underwater” aspect of this in terms of how it stays there.

What would be really cool would be if they made a hyper-portable version that you could carry around easily, I don’t know, attached to your wrist or something like that. That way you could use it both ends of the pool, and not worry about it falling off.

I have one of these. Fits in with many years of experience using wall mounted clocks. I just put it at the end of the pool… BTW, the Kiefer is quite a bit nicer. Same function though. I can’t see the underwater models – I haven’t been able to get my near vision prescription in goggles I can afford.

ditto on this experience. i have one of those too, and its sat idle pretty much every since i bought it. i’m also not convincedthe one i have is as waterproof as it claims to be. in addition, i found it very hard to read without actually stopping to look carefully at it. all around, a really bad piece of design.

just so we’re clear, this is the unit i’m talking about: http://www.swimoutlet.com/product_p/5204.htm

I held in my hands the finis model of lap counting. Until I saw it only went up to 99, no idea why it couldn’t just go one more digit. The clock, my only concern if it would be big enough to see, as the lap counter was big, just with water distortion, is it big enough?

No idea if you’ve thought about it, or have tried, but there is always music- I had a guy friend set up one of my mp3 players with set intervals, couple ways to do this -
had the music continuous with subtle beeps at certain periods, actual speaking the set to me what the workout was, and worked with pauses and adjusted the songs accordingly. Fast tempo with a set beat for speed work, and fluff music for recovery. Of course he got carried away and threw in some items that completly got my attention. It’s sweet to have your workout completly planned before you go, and all you have to do is just swim.

(sure it’s been suggested - watch on beep for intervals?)

I contend you don’t need a pace clock. When I flip turn, I glance down at my trusty Timex and can read my splits as I’m pushing off. Never even hit the lap button. The only challenge then is doing the math to figure out how far I’ve gone, but that just gives you something to do between the walls (those mental gymnastics should be easy for a Princeton grad, right?)

After too many years of swimming, though, I can usually predict my 100 pace to within 1-2 sec before looking at the watch. I could never do that running.

This Kiefer one? http://www.kiefer.com/ProductDetails/ProductDetails.aspx?pid={f3267275-aee3-4567-879c-60151c340877}&pname=Water+Polo+Shot+Pace+Clock+Display&Referer=QUICK_SEARCH&Alias=pace%20clocks&ptct=BS-SR&CTitle=&

It does seem better, but also triple the price…

I have a Finis beeper that I put in my swim cap. I put it on whatever pace I am trying to keep. Nothing to look at. Works well for me.

I started using this pace clock recently and love it. It keeps me honest, as digital numbers don’t seem to “lie” as much as the second hand on a normal pace clock. The numbers are easy to see and it comes with a stand that keeps the clock upright, unless one has some crazy huge flip turn that disperses tons of water.

I don’t use it as a lap counter, though, because I’ve done enough 200s and 400s the past few months to pretty much know where I should be. Plus, my coach would probably fire me if he knew I was using a lap counter.

Jordan,
Are you planning on this being a mobile unit?? For example is this something you will put in your gym bag and take to the pool or is this something you will install at the pool where you swim?

Next question are you going to leave it on the pool deck or is this something you would put underwater??

It will be sort of “mobile.” I’ll put it in my car and bring it to the pool; though if I got one of the colorado clocks, I’d just leave it at the pool that I swim at. I will NOT be putting it under water. That’s not of concern to me. The “waterPROOF” factor is only important because I swim at outdoor polls, and sometimes it rains. So always on deck.

Sorry for the delay, I was out riding… This is the Kiefer clock I was refering to:
