I need new pedals

So, when I purchased my first road bike, I got a set of Ultegra (6600?) series cleats and pedals for the bike. Pretty nice, but the release tension aggravated a previous muscle tear up in my hip area (even with the release tension dialed back). These lasted most of one season.

Season two & three, I switched to the Crank Bros. Quattro pedal system. These have very low release tension (no hip issues), but the float is too much, causing some lower leg issues with a wobbly right foot. That and doing the 100/100 run challenge has given me an Achilles issue that I’m now off the bike and out of the running shoes for a bit of a recovery.

Soooo, onto pedal system #3. The hip is a bit better, but I’m looking for your suggestions on a pedal that has a lower release tension, limited amount of float, adjustable tension, and give a good “base” underneath my shoes.

I’ve got my Shimano SPD-M’s on now to help get over the ankle issues, but I don’t really know if I’ll get any hot spots from that smaller cleat on the longer rides with my Sidi 5 shoes.

What do you use or recommend? I’m not particularly enamoured with Speedplays and the mud pies that they can collect in the shoe bases.

Thanks!

Take a look at Joe SAntos’ review of pedals. Pretty in depth and honest. I went with the SHimano SPD-Sl’s after reading it, and no regrets at all.

go for speedplay zeros. you’ll have adjustable float, lots of cornering clearance, low stack height, low weight, easy serviceable and you can also get them in a light action version for beginners
