I need a kids 24" Road Bike. Have the big brands abandoned my kid?

Where can I find a kids road bike with 24" wheels? Does anyone have one in the garage or know the best brand to go searching for? I’m in Southern California (92562).

I shopped local and found this Fondreist JR9 24" which is awesome but has Miche tubies, which are too much of a pain for me,(24" tubies aren’t easy to find) and retails for $1000. http://www.fondriestbici.com It needs to be reasonable. My boy is 9 and will grow out of it!

This looks nice online, haven’t seen one in person:
http://www.feltbicycles.com/USA/2014/Bikes/Road/F-Series-Road-Bike/f24.aspx for $800

I also found this online too:
http://redlinebicycles.com/bikes/2014-conquest-24/ looks nice but is a cross setup for $650. I suppose I could swap road tires on it for more $.

I’m having trouble buying local. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Look for road bikes with small frames (43-47cm) and/or ‘650’ wheel size. Often listed on ebay, CL, etc.

(Sometime listed as women’s or youth size…)

IIRC Scott and Fuji might make some.

Look at the Fuji Ace. I’ve got one for my son.

Ah. Fuji ace 650. That’s what I was trying to think of. It’s a great bike.

My wife bought our grandson a Scott. I think she paid $650. Got an end of season deal.

Another vote for the Fuji Ace. It is a cheaper bike, but at that level and age it is much more about getting out there and having fun. For a somewhat odd alternative, the Titanflex beam bike is also available with 24" wheels.

Just another one to consider.

Islabikes have a fantastic reputation in the UK.
That one is designed so you can rebuild it in a number of different ways.
I highly recommend them.

i promote races for kids so get to see a lot of kids struggling with various bikes. I bought these for my kids

i like them because they are somewhat light as they have no suspension and can be ridden on and off road. once my kids are done w/ the bikes i just give them to friends, there isn’t much of a market for used kids bikes here

Redline also makes a line of 24" bikes, which they market as a 'cross bike/road bike. You can find them used on eBay and also on some of the cyclocross forums like cxmagazine.com etc…

+1.

Scored a trek pilot 2.1 with full ultegra plus accessories, 43 cm 650c wheels - in great shape for around $300 on ebay a couple of years ago. My 11 year old has been riding this bike for 2 years and he loves it.

I haven’t seen a pic yet but Valdora has a 24" kids bike in the works. Probably worth it to give Pete a call there and see what it entails. My kids are not big enough yet or else I’d have one on order!

I just got my son a fuji ace 650 here in peoria az from performance $370 I know he will out grow it soon so didn’t want to spend a lot. The peoria store has a 24" in stock and another 650 too.

Along with the Redline and the Felt F24, there is a new Felt F24x and Felt F95 Jr (650c) to consider. The Felt website has a dealer locator (http://www.feltbicycles.com/USA/Dealer-Search.aspx?type=radius&query=92562&radius=50&performance=1&lifestyle=1&bmx=1) and two locations come up within 10 miles. I know that Friction is fairly new and the owners’ nephews are both similar in age to your son. Give them a call and tell them I sent you.

This. Got the bike below NOS for Little Miss Jr. Quads when she was 9 and she outgrew it at 12. Little Master Jr. Quads hopped on it late last summer and loves it, or I’d send it your way. IMO MUCH better than the majority of kid specific road bikes (American Classic Sprint 350s to start with). Hard to find, but worth it.
