Just last night I opened a bottle of 21yo single malt a friend brought back from the distillery in Scotland. Tt was heaven in an old fashioned glass. How can I give that up?

yes, yes, yes, limited amounts of ice. no watered down stuff. I don’t like to discriminate(Jodi) so a red wine is also nice…by glass or bottle! I can remember those ten beer(+) nights as an undergrad, good times, unfortunately I can rarely handle those nights anymore. Now a glass of the goodstuff is way better than a case race.
If you saw the video on CNN.com about the 101 yr old guy running marathons, he drinks beer regularly.
That’s good enough for me.
In moderation it is fine, otherwise, like anything it can be a problem.

I train SO I can drink and eat ice cream.
Oh your person of taste who knows what your are talking about. I tip my hat too you.
I’m sitting in the Air Canada lounge with a beer right now…
They’ve got Johnny Black and Glenfiddich, but given a choice between cheap scotch and a decent beer (or nothing) I’ll take the option.
I won’t drink if I’m looking at an important (to me only) race in the next day or so, or if I’m looking at a really early morning for training. Otherwise it’s all good - I’ve have decent 20 mile training runs on mornings after fairly incoherent evenings.
I echo the sentiment that an OK beer is better than an OK Whisky (I call it thus, and spell it thus because I am actually from Scotland) - but a good dram is as remarkable as it is expensive. I’ve recently become enthusiastic about a Scottish ale called Lia Fail - much cheaper than a good dram, but still 3 times the price of a local (Canadian prairies) beer. I do like a nice port as well. Also the humble martini. I’ve found (as must have many before me) that if you keep your gin in the freezer, and put a little vermouth in a glass and set it in the freezer a quarter of an hour before you need it, you have have a nice, low stress, low maintenance martini. And in this season of “farch” a nice glass in the evening is even preferable to swimming, biking or running! have to watch out for that. j
This question seems to pop up a lot but I’ve never really seen any answers based on science.
I’m really curious how alcohol effects the recovery process, particularly with different amounts. Sure, people train and drink, but that doesn’t really tell you much.

I only drink Scotch because somehow they named it after me. I found it when I googled my name at the request of a friend, amazing to find it as the top response.
The Irish have a saying,
“The Scots came over here to learn two things from us; and they’re beginning to get the hang of the bag pipes”
Midleton. The best whiskEy in the world.
Scotch isn’t alcohol.
It’s the nectar of the gods.
mmmm The Macallan
.
Glenfiddich? Pffft. A kid’s drink. Tasty for sure, but not the cream of the crop…
The Macallan. Laphroaig. Lagavulin. Those are MEN’s drinks.
Some buddies of mine and I have a yearly “scotch and beef night” where we grill up some tasty bbq and sample some of our stock, including many mentioned, but some not: Talisker and Arbeg (If you like peat…yum), and the ultimate from my friend’s felt lined coffer, the one and only Johnny Walker Blue. WOW. A blend, but certainly like having all the angels sing in chorus rather than just one! And a good scotch is not a drink of alcohol. It is what makes life worth living. If you can justify those dimpled zipps, ya gotta be able to justify a wee dram of the good stuff every once in a while. Brings a smile. And stop slandering the stuff as “whiskey.” Its called scotch for a reason!

Its not whiskey, it never was whiskey and never will be whiskey. Whisky perhaps, but never whiskey.
Yeah…forgot Talisker…and Oban. I’d add those to my top three above.
And JW Blue is the ONLY blend I’ll even consider. It’s a pretty good sipper, that’s for sure.
None - I still enjoy the occasional beer or nice glass of a hearty red wine like a cabernet or shiraz. I’d think the only real detriment to training would be if you were getting ripped a few times during the week.
I second Laphroaig, my friend got me on the stuff. Very smokey mmmm
“i think i drank about 10 beers last night. no joke.”
Rookie! Back in the day I could easily consume a case of beer or more a night. Don’t really remember much about those nights though! Fortunately I survived and can now be completely satisfied with a single beer or glass of wine.
Zero, although i dont drink very often. Even though i have my alarm set for 5:30 for an early run, tonight presented an opportunity for some fun that i could not pass up. Being 22 and single DOES NOT SUCK ![]()
