I love Mars bars, when I ride

A friend grabbed a Mars bar when on a long ride in Penticton, I tried it as well. The bar taste so damn good, and gave me a ton of energy. I love them so much I ate 4 during a 6 hour MTB ride last Sunday.

My dirty little secret. I am now going to walk to the gas bar across the street and pick a few up for my weekend rides.

I predict this is the beginning of the slippery slope back to being fat.

For a guy who seems intent on weight loss and improved health, I’m surprised at you ride nutrition choice.** In my own experience it’s a pretty slippery slope from junk food on the ride to junk food just after the ride to junk food all the time;)** Just because you’re burning a ton of kjs it really doesn’t make a legitimate excuse for poor nutritional choices.

Wouldn’t they melt?

And yea, maybe not the best ride fuel.

Milk Way and Mountain Dew… nothing sold at your local bike or run shop will dig you out of a hole faster. I have both in every single bag I get during an Ironman as an “in case”.

… and I’m like 5% body fat.

My go to after a 5+ hour ride or brick (if I’m smashed):
Surge!!

you could be right. But the deliciousness would be worth it.

Not on early Am ride. When I was using them for MTB endurance race I pulled them from my cooler when I made water bottle exchanges.

Isn’t deliciousness what originally got you up to 225lb;)

Where is the "100% of Daily deliciousness " row?

What is 240 calories in the middle of a 2100 calorie workout?

Calories in vs calories out.

I burned 3600 calories during Sunday’s ride. The bars were easily digested and provide me with energy. I have never meet an energy bar that worked nearly as well.

240 calories of deliciousness while watching Lebron shit the bed = bad.
240 calories of deliciousness 90 min into a 180minute ride = good!

While I might say it isn’t the best thing for someone trying to cut weight to be eating for fuel, that is mostly for reasons of forming good eating habits. I can’t tell you how many times I screwed up fueling a ride, and popped into the first 7/11 that I saw, purchased and sucked down a Mtn Dew and a 3 Musketeers. Instantly feel better and can ride strong again. Simple sugar is the best for that sort of thing. And where do we get the easiest to access simple sugars? Yup.

Sweet, I never thought of adding a mountain dew. That would taste sweet.

Here is my thought, if I can diegest it well, I enjoy eating it, and I limit it to on the bike and rides of three hours or more (all things I have done) it should be fine. If it helps me ride longer and burn even more calories in doing so it will help with the weight loss, not hurt it.

For the record. I did this on two rides in April in Penticton, a mtb ride two Sundays ago (as a nutrition trial) and last weekend. I still have no calories on rides short of 3 hours.

100% agreed. I purposely put the “smashed” part in there since when I finish a long ride and I’m fine, not ruined, I make a crazy healthy recovery smoothie (berries, banana, low fat milk, whey protein isolate, spinach, flax, cinnamon).

When I was into Mountaineering this is what we always filled our packs with. High altitude climbing, glacier crossings and hut to hut all day hikes. It packs a lot of calories into a small package. We obviously ate other foods as well, but for something to eat while on the move with a good shot of energy, these were the go to things.

I know several coaches, one being Sutton, that recommends candy for fuel instead of sports products. Says the bars and such can be so thick and you have seen people eat a dozen candy bars and not get sick. And how many people eat gummy bears during training? Quite a bit

Guess where I figured out how much chocolate works? On the side of the road at Ironman Cozumel with Brett Sutton. I was straight up bonking, ready to walk off the course and Sutton grabbed my arm and told me to eat as much as I could and stand still for 5 minutes. I ran the last 9 or 10 miles faster paced than I ran the first 4.

I’ve been taking snickers almonds/kitkat/mars/other choco bars and mt dew for those long weekend rides. Tastes good and cheaper than gels too when on sale at the grocery store. I use infinit and gels during races though.

So you received outside assitance and did not DQ yourself? Sure you drafted too…I am kidding, talk about good timing with him being right there. I remember watching a video of a Tour rider about 10 miles out and the guys in the support car throwing food at him telling him to eat everything.

Being in Texas we cannot have much chocolate since chocolate and 100F degree weather do not mix well. But stopping halfway on a ride for a coke and candy works well when training
