Where are the good places to go on friday and saturday nights? My roommate and I are both 22. We went to a few cool bars the other night but damn the drinks are pricey here
First off my condollences. Its been quite a while since I lived there. But, we always went to the Georgetown “M” street area. But, we lived fairly close to that part of town. Have you been to the “Old Town” Alexandria area? Get used to the drink prices, and the “in” clubs to go, always seem to change. Sorry, cant be of much help.
M Street is so very 1969.
Or there always was the “Cellar Door”, but I digress.
As others mentioned, Georgetown. Also, Adam’s Morgan (very college-y), Dupont Circle (a gay neighborhood, but some good restaurants and bars), parts of Capitol Hill (used to be a bad area, better now. Pennsylvania Ave. and 8th Street have some good bars).

I went to GW for undergrad and now live and work around Arlington, so x2 on the recommendations above.
Also worth checking out is U street - they have a lot of cool jazz clubs, including this place called HR57, which is BYOB. Not to mention Ben’s Chili bowl.
If you aren’t averse to crossing the river, the Clarendon stop on the Orange Line in Arlington has a really cool strip of bars and restaurants. Much less college-y than DC, mostly 25-30 year old professional types. Liberty Tavern, Whitlows and Clarendon Ballroom come to mind.
DC and Northern VA are awesome - unlike NY (where I am from originally) you still have four seasons but winter is mild enough that you can ride outdoors pretty much year-round. It’s definitely a big city but very manageable and much less congested than the rest of the major east coast cities. It’s the most educated city in the country per capita, and there are tons of interesting people from all over the country and world.
Although I always laugh at my friends in DC who came there by way of the South or Midwest - they are always complaining about how DC is a big, crazy city that’s too crowded and has terrible winters, while if you talk to all of the NY/NJ expats, we all feel like we’re in the Deep South haha.
I know nothing about places to drink in DC…but the HIV infection rate is around 3% and is up 22% since 2006. I figured since you were headed to the bars you might want a fair warning ![]()
