I drank the kool-aide ... now what

Okay, so I finally purchased a aero disc cover and now what? Are there different conditions in which I should avoid using the cover or should I use it for all races. Any hints or experiences will be greatly appreciated.

Which one? I’m thinking about getting one too.

That’s where I’m gonna go too. Now I get to just sit back and watch the responses.

I’m willing to bet that most will say use it all the time.

You should only use it for every race that is not Kona.

PS - little secret - your bike will actually be MORE manageable on a windy day w/ the cover on as opposed to off.

Ordered my wheels from them yesterday along with a disc cover for the back - so excited!

Will likely leave it on 100% of the time because I won’t know how to take it off and put it back on

I understand what a pain in the arse it might be to change it out frequently or how one might want to get used to it in varying conditions, but doesn’t their website say to NOT use it all the time, ie training?

I change mine out all the time. Takes like 7-10 mins, if that.
My first one lasted 4 full seasons that way. <$25 / year for a race wheel is a ridiculous bargain.

Now, I know of several other folks who mount theirs up right before their first race of the season, and leave it on there until after the last race.
They seem to have no problems w/ this. (typically this is for folks who use electric tape to attach the wheelcover. I don’t bother w/ that.)
YMMV.

Mine will be going on dedicated race wheels, why would I ever take it off? I’m not going to Kona. :frowning:

You should put it on your wheel and be “that guy” riding around with it in a variety of conditions and figure out where your threshold is for the conditions you use it in. Ride it on some windy days to get a feel for it. There is a whole lot of mythology about riding a disk on windy days, mostly perpetuated by people who have never ridden a disk or are crappy bike handlers to begin with. The first time I rode it on a windy day, I thought to myself “This is what everyone freaks out about?”

One trick I do is to get a schraeder/presta adapter like this one:

since most pump heads seem to be set up so you can’t get the presta hole onto the valve with the cover on, but you can get the schraeder hole on. I have a H3 front, and I use it on that as well for the same reason. This is way easier to use than a crack pipe, imo. I also like to tape the cover to the rim with electrical tape so the cover is nice and quiet.

I have had mine for 5 years, probably done 30 races on it, and have yet to do a race where I haven’t used it, and I do some fairly hilly races, by triathlon standards at least.

Good luck!

Ok a quick point

wheelbuilder.com have been FANTASTIC with me so far

ordered mine to be delivered to the UK and it came within a few days (very good) AND they actually worked out the shipping cheaper and refunded ME the difference

thank you wheelbuilder.com … I will sacrifice 100 german triathletes in Switzerland in your honour!
