I did my first tri today

750yd swim, 16.1mi bike, 4.5mi run. 2:04:18

The swim was good (10:48). I’m not a cyclist (1:15 or so). My legs felt like cement pillars for the run (40min I think?)

I’m so not a cyclist! Is there anyone else around here who loves the swim and the run but really does not enjoy biking?!

Nope. LOL I like to swim, I LOVE to bike, and I suck at running. Running is painful!!! You’d like one of the aquathlon events where you just swim and run. I came into triathlons from running, but as I improved on the bike my run went all to hell.

Congrats on your first tri! Very cool!

The forum is pretty heavily bike-biased, and I think you’ll find more people who don’t enjoy the swim or the run. Congrats on your race :-))))

“as I improved on the bike my run went to hell”

Now I’m even less encouraged to put in bike time.

Great job

Just keep it fun.

Thom

It’s not about the race it’s the training.

I know the feeling, I used to HATE cycling and love running and biking. Not to sound trite, but getting a decent tri bike that was properly fitted to me helped immensely.

If I remember your earlier posts, you’re “A” race is a marathon this year. (which one btw?) And it appears you do a lot of swimming for personal enjoyment. It seems Tri’s are just along for the ride. Last time I checked, most of us do this (these) sport(s) for personal enjoyment. If you’re not dead set on being a Tri monster, why stop the current training? IMO, to modify the montra over at Gordo’s place, replace JFT with JHF (Just Have Fun).

I stopped “training” a while ago. I started having fun instead.

For what it’s worth,

Daniel

Yeah my A race is the MDI marathon.

Thanks for the reminder that it is about having fun! I need to hear that sometimes.

I’m a lousy cyclist, a good swimmer and a competent runner. But, I’m actually starting to like the bike, because it’s new, different and very easy to make improvements there, all of which makes it a lot of fun. After all, it’s not that satisfying to be a FOP swimmer when you know that you are swimming slower than you could when you were 13.

Is this a trick question? Did I log onto the wrong site? =)

As someone pointed out, this website is very bike-focused.

I have found myself increasingly enjoying the bike, and the run is just fun. I love to swim, but the training (due the monotony of the pool) is outright Zzzzzzz.

Congrats on your 1st tri!!! We’ll show you the secret handshake later…

I’m more of a runner, (15 years), than a cyclist, (5 years) - so, I feel your pain. I think it just takes a few years to develop the cycling - that’s my excuse, anyway! But stick with it - it’ll make you strong!!!

Congrats, again!

well maybe in 23 months I’ll start enjoying the bike leg

didn’t know there were secret handshakes  very cool
.

I’m with you. Cycling is still very new to me, therefore the most challenging, therefore I much prefer to run or swim…

Nice job tigerchick!

I’m doing my first tri this Sunday and I’m getting fired up. Do you feel that you met or exceeded your expectations as far as performance and pacing? Did you go out guns blazing?

I decided the night before that I was going to do it… my goal was to get through the damn thing.

I was first out of the water on the swim leg, definitely pushed that. The rest of it didn’t go as well - I’d never run after biking before!

Good luck with your race

the bike is the best bit - you get to sit down
.

it’s like I was coasting down the hills, and if I pedaled I would’ve just been spinning my feet and not doing anything, but everyone else was pedaling and going faster. One day I’ll figure it out.

swimming’s like laying down
.

pedaling even while going downhill keeps the lactic acid from building up… one of the few pieces of bike advice i can give!
