I can't stop farting, WTF?

So, last week, I had a stomach bug. It was a little odd… started with diarrhea, then that kinda stopped, but I had a low fever and malaise (spent all of last Monday in bed). The fever and malaise got better by Wednesday, but my diarrhea came back (bad but not brutal diarrhea). Took an Immodium on Wednesday night, which plugged me up, but then I started having the worst gas. Really wretched smelling stuff, too. I seems to be driven by lactose - I’ve always been a little lactose intolerant but nothing like this (usually a couple small farts if I eat lactose, but these bouts have lasted for hours and have been some of the worst smelling farts ever). I even get the gas if I take lactase pills. I started pooping again normally too, but the farting goes on. I’m sitting in my office grossing myself out and hoping no one stops by.

Will this gas get better in a few days?

I doubt if it will start smelling any better, if that is your question. You could always bring a dog to work with you and blame him. Sorry, that’s all the help I have other than, when you are running don’t trust that it is a fart.

I’m sorry, but how is this related to triathlon exactly?

Cut out dairy from your diet, problem solved. This will surely open a can of worms but milk was intended for ingestion by baby cows, not human beings. All human beings are lactose intolerant. Just some process it better than others. Great book by a fellow traithlete named Brendan Brazer can explain it better than me. Its called Thrive

All triathletes are human. Human’s fart. Therefore, triathletes fart.

“When I was a baby I was suckin’ on titties, now I’m grown up still suckin’ on titties. Different titties, but titties nonetheless…”

Oh yeah, I came here to make a point too…there is lactose in breast milk too. Roughly 40% of the carbs by volume.

Some of your gut microbiome may have become unbalance due to your sickness. Try some beneficial bacterial cultures like yogurt or pro-biotic pills to get back into balance.

What was the rest of the cow intended for, then?

I’m sorry, but how is this related to triathlon exactly?

At my last HIM I farted constantly. I guess triathletes fart?

What was the rest of the cow intended for, then?

Tipping.

I had a bug a few weeks ago with diarrhea and gas that suck around for a while. I asked/told my friend who is a nurse about it while I was at her house, and she immediately handed me some of her 5 yr old son’s GoGurts (sp?). I ate three of them and felt incredibly better the following morning. Could have been a coincidence but I doubt it.

Also realize that whey protein is a big source of lactose; make sure it’s not in any of the nutrition bars you’re eating. Eat a heavy vegetable diet, organic soup, yogurt, simple carbs (like wheat bread), etc for a few days to try to clean out your system. Read labels and avoid lactose. Hopefully things “re-set” after a few days.

Also, consider if there is a chance that you were food poisoned or contracted a weird stomach bug while traveling.

mmmm boobies…not trying to play nutritionist or go all vegan crazy but it’s been proven that dairy milk produces and acidic response in the body. Whether its the lactose or whatever I couldn’t tell you. Cows milk was intended for baby cows, breast milk for baby triathletes  Some people’s bodies handle it better than others. Studies have also shown that increased dairy consumption can lead to osteoporosis. Dairy makes the body acidic, the best way to balance the pH is to absorb calcium from the bones which is alkaline. Again take it for whatever it is, again I’m no scientist just trying to give info on some things i’ve researched. Brazer’s book is a really fascinating read.

I’ve had the same problem for 31 years.

IM Perform makes me fart…my wife calls it fart juice.

Men fart, women flatulate. Sometimes when running I keep up a 180 FPM rhythm for a disturbing amount of seconds.

Note to self. Brendan Brazer is an idiot.

I’m a guy, I love this thread. “Fart Juice” priceless.

This, right here, is a great, steaming lump of bull shit. It’s not proven. It’s never been proven. It’s bro-science. See here:

Body pH is not, I repeat, NOT influenced by diet.

Cows milk was intended for baby cows…

And cow muscle was intended for getting the cow around the west Asian grasslands, but that doesn’t stop people eating it. What’s your point?

Studies have also shown that increased dairy consumption can lead to osteoporosis.

When I google this, all I find in support of the dairy = osteoporosis is crank websites like Natural News. Let’s just say that the evidence for this claim is… ummm… mixed:

Here’s the money quote:

“Of 52 investigator-controlled calcium intervention studies, all but two showed better bone balance at high intakes , or greater bone gain during growth, or reduced bone loss in the elderly, or reduced fracture risk.”

Dairy makes the body acidic, the best way to balance the pH is to absorb calcium from the bones which is alkaline.

Arggghhhhh! It hurts us precious!

Again take it for whatever it is, again I’m no scientist just trying to give info on some things i’ve researched. Brazer’s book is a really fascinating read.

Just parroting a popular book without understanding the key elements as a basis for giving dietary advice is not a good idea. Ever.

Look, I’m cool with veganism. I wish there were more vegans. I eat a substantially vegan diet myself. There are many, many good reasons to be vegan. But “MILK IS GONNA BREAK OUR BONES AND MAKE US GO ALL ACID LIKE!!!111!!” is not one of them.

Why am I not surprised to see a government regulated website supporting views that encourage the dairy industry. Do some research on Dr T. Collin Campbell and you’ll find out exactly what sort influence the meat and dairy industry have. Naturally it’s going to support the argument for dairy. Your kidding yourself if you think body pH isn’t influenced by diet. That’s ridiculous. It’s the number one contributing factor. Also I’m not arguing that calcium doesn’t help increase bone strength. Like I said before its the acidosis that occurs as a result of dairy consumption that overshadows the intake of calcium. There are much better ways of increasing calcium intake than drinking milk. And honestly what’s wrong with natural news? Just because it isn’t a main stream news outlet doesn’t mean it’s all bullshit.
