I can eat my weight in Salmon

Last night my wife had to remind me that the competition that i’m training for is not the world eating championships of salmon. I honestly think I took down better than a pound and a half of wild caught sockey along with a nice salad and half a box of whole grain couscous.
Honestly any seafood I can pretty much put away at will and feel great about it, especially when training a lot.

Anyway, I’m pretty sure that this is par for the course, but anybody else experience similar food cravings when putting in the long training hours? Oh and any of your favorite seafood recipies are much welcomed since I’ve been eating nothing but for over a week and i’m running out of ideas.

Instead of mayo, use avocado with your canned tuna. It’s a much healthier and tastier alternative. It’s a great blend of lean protein (dry) and unsaturated fats (moist). That’s why the tuna avocado rolls are so good… I’m hungry.

Never heard of the avocado idea; I’ll have to try it. We use greek yogurt in place of mayonnaise for tuna salad and turkey salad because a) mayonnaise is disgusting, and b) no, seriously, mayonnaise is disgusting.

A very simple recipe: take a raw fish fillet and pepper both sides, then wrap it in a slice of prosciutto and throw it in the frying pan with a dab of olive oil or Pam for a few minutes per side. We typically use cod fillets but I think you could use any white fish. It’s as simple as it gets and my wife and I both love the flavor. As a side, we boil new potatoes and steam whole green beans and toss them together with pesto. Mmm…delicious.

Absolutely. Before training for Triathlon, I never craved fish of any kind, but now I crave Salmon something fierce.

Last night I fired up the smoker and hot smoked a full filet of Salmon. I brined it first in soy sauce and vodka, let it dry and then popped it in the smoker. 45 min later, it’s done with that deep red-brown color and that wonderfull smell. (it helps that I always warm up the smoker by smoking some bacon first). Serve the salmon with an apricot-peach sauce and smoked corn on the cob. It disappears liks magic.

Wow. I just soak mine in normal brine. I will have to try that. Did you actually cook the corn in the smoker? Never thought of that.

Yes. Leave the corn in the husk. Takes about 1 hour at 275-300 deg. Just peel off the husk and the corn inside is fresh and tasty.

Yes, it is totally “normal” to have food cravings when training for endurance events. Just like food cravings when pregnant…if your body is missing something it will crave it. Putting in long hours can certainly drain your body’s normal levels of pretty much anything.

Please keep in mind salmon, swordfish, tuna, shark, and tile fish have very high levels of mercury. My husband had mercury poisoning when he was in college and it is very dangerous. Granted he was eating 2 cans of tuna a day, but the promise of low-fat / high protein can be very tempting to over indulge.

The symptoms of mercury poisoning can include sensory impairment (vision, hearing, and speech) as well as skin discoloration and shedding of the skin. My husband was rock climbing a lot and the skin on his hands were shedding like mad.

I crave Carvel Ice cream cake , Nutella , Pizza, steak and chocalate. Count yourself lucky you crave fish ;0)

Just don’t add that you are under-weight to that or I may have a tantrum.

Me too, esp smoked salmon, regardless of training load.

Great tip re: avocado & tuna, although I’m not giving up mayo…some people think a rare ribeye is disgusting too
