Hey - I just wanted a little input on an overall training shoe for 2022. I am planning on running a marathon in May 2022 and ultimately doing Ironman Cozumel in 2022 as well.
My 2022 race shoes will be the Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next%, but I would like some input on a training shoe that I get the majority of my miles in. I am debating between the Brooks Hyperion Elite 2 vs. the Hoka One One Carbon X2 - or, any alternative suggestions?
I both trained and raced in a pair of Saucony Endorphin Pros this year and really liked them, but would like to have two separate pairs of shoes for next year. If it is of any relevance at all, I am a 5’5" 135 lb. woman. Thank you.
Actually, IMO, the best shoe for the specific use you are talking about is the Brooks Hyperion Tempo. This is the companion to the Brooks Hyperion Elite 2. The Elite is meant for racing only and the Tempo is a comfortable but light and fast shoe meant for training miles. The Tempo has gotten great reviews as a a training shoe and even as a racing shoe for those that don’t want to spend the extra money for a carbon plate.
I’ve got the tempo too, great shoe but not that comfortable for long miles. The endorphin speed is much better.
That being said the op is rather lighter than me so the tempo may work well. There is a tempo 2 on its way soon though so may be worth waiting that out.
granted i’m a dude, but, i’m 5’6" and 133lbs … this year i started wearing the Clifton 8’s for almost all my training miles and raced in the Rocket X … i’m in LOVE with the Clifton 8’s and have already purchased two additional pairs for fall and next year… the Clifton’s may be of interest to you for training miles…

As mentioned the Hyperion Elite 2 is a race only shoe and iirc Brooks says something along the lines of them being 150 or 250 miles of use shoes.
IMO the Carbon X2s were meh. Hoka sent me a pair, I ran > .5 miles in them and thought they were too firm, of course ymmv on that. They are supposed to be softer than V1 but I didn’t find that to be the case.
I’ve been given some Hyperion Tempos and thought they were awesome, so awesome I actually bought a pair of them. The tempo 2 is almost out and they are coming out with a tempo max or were. IDK if they still are.
Some other shoes to try Hoka Clifton, Rincon and Mach. Asics Noosa Tris (we can’t keep this shoe in stick currently and we are struggling to backfill bc inventory is very low from Asics), Saucony Kinvara (if you like the machs), saucony endorphin speeds, NB 1080, Nike zoom invincible, infinity run or tempo, brooks launch.
I’m sure there are about a 5-8 other shoes I can’t think of. If I do I’ll come back and add to the bottom of this thread. Haven’t been in the store lately to see what we’ve got on the wall.
