this is confounding to me. i need a wiki. for example, Dymoece olives/needles are a fraction of what shimano charges, and are advertised as shimano compatible. are they any good? can i use magura, hayes, shimano, avid interchangeably? i have found nothing that works for late model SRAM road/gravel except for SRAM (you just use a stealthamajig, so far, in my experience, on AXS or it won’t work). as for shimano, i have not found good, fairly recently published, video tutorials, for road (which is to say, for GRX). they must exist! please help.

This all you need to do shimano brakes.
I have never looked into other barbs or olives.
Are you not signed up on Shimano S-Tec all the videos are there

Clutch,
If you’ve done your STEC videos, you’ll know that you’re missing safety goggles and gloves from your photo. And … that’s it!
But in all seriousness, getting the Shimano BH90 hose kit as you’ve illustrated is by far the best way to make sure you have the right hose, olives and inserts for your Shimano GRX build

I don’t do sram (ick) so no opinions there. For Shimano, there are some items (olives/barbs) that don’t seem to be manufactured to the same tolerance as the shimano stuff. I no longer have them (so no packaging or pictures to share) but have ordered olives/barbs from ebay and amazon thinking I’d save some money. in both cases, both the olive and barb were considerably looser in and on the hose than the shimano stuff and that was enough of a deal breaker for me.
I’ve used jagwire hoses for several years (color palette reasons) without issue. The various adapters/fittings work fabulously.
I didn’t have a lot of fun bleeding the grx levers though on a recent install - no clue why, just stubborn bubbles?
