Those of you riding a transition, what is your hydration set up? I’m told that an aero bottle up front defeats some of the aero advantages of the bike and because of the shape of the seat post I can’t find anything to add water bottles on the back. Right now I’ve got a getto rubber band system going with my aero bars so I can lay a water bottle between them.

The Specialized Virtue bottle was designed for the Transition and according to Mark Cote at least doesn’t make it any slower. Then, get a more solid mount for a regular bottle between your arms (search the forum) and you should be set for nearly anything.
If it’s good for Rappstar, it should be good for you

You could get one of the rear hydration things that clamp onto your saddle rails. I don’t believe that setup has anything to do with the seat post. Something along the lines of this (hydrotail):

Don’t have this on my Transition, but it looks like it will work. I use the Profile Design Aero Bottle on the front and a regular water bottle on the down tube.

I think that the specialized bottle is the best way for shorter races like he says. there are a lot of people saying how much more drag seat post mounted bottles are then nothing there. but if you have to do it then I would have both the aero bottle and the seat post bottles
Mr. Rocket,
I run one bottle between the bars up front and a rear hydration system off of the back. VERY happy with this set-up. I use the profile design rear hydration system…works fine with my 09 Comp. One bottle for my tube, CO2, etc…
Good luck.

I have a speedfil mounted on the frame for training since water can be scarce on long rides, works great. The speedfil hold 40 oz’s so is a bit much for racing. As noted on earlier threads you can mount two bottles on the back from the saddle rail, not the stem, and and you are set for HIM/IM races, maybe one more bottle up front on the aero bars. I take nothing for a sprint and leave the two bottles in back for an oly.
P.S. I also bought the specific Specialized bottle for transition, had a hard time pedaling and seating it back properly, lost it a few times, looks good, but not practical for me.
I use the Specialized bottle- it does the trick.
Profile Aero Bottle up front and regular water bottle on the downtube. I have the Specialized water bottle that fits our transitions, but I only use that for shorter races and not Ironmen, as I want to be able to throw off a bottle and pick up a bottle on the Ironman distance. Hard to do with the flat shape of the Specialized Transition water bottle.
Personally I hate the behind the seat water bottle holders, but that is my personal preferance.
I run the Specialized Virtue aero bottle on the frame. And the old school (only because its discontinued) Vision Tech carbon bottle cage between the aerobars. I have a friend with the Virtue on the frame and the new XLab Torpedo Mount & Cage between the aerobars. Either way works great. And looks great. And is fast!
do you have a photo of your rear set up? I am doing my first ironman in March and have a 09 specialized transition comp. I need to get a rear hydration system. If you have the name of the profile design set up you have I’d really appreciate it.
Mahalo!
For long-distance I have:
BTA Bottle up frontStandard Bottle Cage zip-tied to saddle railsVirtue Aero-Bottle in the frame: Sliced open to use as a container for gels, bars & repair kit (basically a DIY-Fuelcell)
.
For long course/70.3, profile design HC bottle and refill at aid stations, tube and co2 in behind the seat bottle. On training I just stop at conv stores and refill. If I was training/racing full IM distance maybe I’ll use the frame bottle too but for now just the HC up front + refill works good.
