Ok, so last night I am 1 hour into a 3 hour bike ride. It is SUPER humid and I polished off my first bottle of Infinit within that first hour. I have one bottle left and no possible chance of re-filling the bottle (I was out in nowhere’s ville with no houses/shops/nothing). Stupid route I know. Anyway, if you know you only have 1 bottle left do you:
A. sip it for the next 2 hours
B. take large gulps every 20 minutes or so.
C. Down it and hope for the best.
I would think (not knowing too much), that A would not be that beneficial. I thought perhaps C might be the best since then my body will have a large amount of liquid at once to deal with and perhaps the onset of dehydration could be avoided.
Any opinions or people in the know?
i don’t know why but once I am out the door, I am literally unable to go back the same way I came. Pretty stupid I know. But yeah, that likely would have been the best option and honestly, not something that even occurred to me.
(from “A Night at the Opera”) Friends…how we happened to come to America is a great story. But I don’t tell that. When we first started out, we got-a no idea you give us this-a grand reception. We donna deserve it. And when I say we donna deserve it, believe me, I know what I’m a-talkin’ about…So now I tell you how we fly to America. The first time we started, we get-a halfway across when we run out-a gasoline and we gotta go back. Then I take-a twice as much gasoline. This time we-a just about to land - maybe three feet - when whaddya think? We run out-a gasoline again and a-back we go again to get-a more gas. This time I take-a plenty gas. Well, we get-a halfway over when what-a you think-a happened? We forgot-a the aeroplane. So we gotta sit down and we talk it over. Then I get-a a great idea. We no take-a gasoline. We no take-a the aeroplane. We take a steamship. And that, friends, is how we fly across the ocean.
I would recommend:
A) a third bottle
B) using your infinit or whatever in a concentrated formula so you can use it as fuel/electrolytes and drink only water (easier to come by).
C) I don’t know where you live but if the area you are riding is that rural, think about knocking on someone’s door and asking if you can fill up a bottle from their hose. I personally have never done this, but a friend of mine used to swear by it. He said no one ever turned him down and that people were always really nice and told him to come back anytime.
I think I’d (if returning home or going back in time and NOT downing the 1st bottle in 30 minutes) slowly sip for the next 1 1/2 hours - no reson to keep drinking for the last 30 minutes of the ride - My thought is that the body wouldn’t react well to big variances -
Is there a right answer to this question? I’m intrigued…
I remember reading an article somewhere that you are better off drinking the last bottle normally. If you sip then you get into a dehydrated stage and never recover, whereas if you drink normally you stay hydrated until late in the workout as opposed to relatively early.
Makes sense, but not if the ride is 3 hours long, and the first bottle is gone in 30 minutes - so the 2nd would be gone in another 30 minutes - then there’s still 2 hours left in the ride - road kill!!
yeah, no room for a thrid bottle anywhere. Pockets full of crap…but that is a separate issue. ( need a saddle bag).
The thing is, usually I stop and buy what I need but I forgot my money and the 1 store that was out there the bitch behind the counter said they didn’t have a tap…even though there was one at the end of the counter. Again…another story.
I was out where if I wanted to knock on someone’s door, I would have had to bike down gravel roads for a km just to get to the farmer’s front door. Believe me, some of the streams were starting to look good at 2.5 hours. Stupid planning on my part. I ended up taking bigger gulps for 1.5 hours but I was starting to feel it by the end. Everything started to tighten up.
D. Drink it at somewhat regular intervals on a schedule designed to empty the thing when you are about 20 mins from home. Once you reach that point, drinking won’t have much effect before you’re home anyhow.
C. is a mistake since you risk wasting some of the Infinit (which in this case is ill named) by drinking it all soon. Even if there was no risk of peeing some of it out, there is a psychological benefit of knowing you still have more left and periodically consuming it.
In addition to the other obvious advice you’ll receive in response to this self-induced predicament, consider that a single iodine tablet weighs almost nothing and allows you to drink from most streams, lakes, whatever.
