Hydration for a 9 mile run?

Here is a photo of my friend Daniel from yesterdays trail run. We decided to run 9 miles on the trails, and do it at a moderate pace. The temperature was about 73 degrees yesterday.

Daniel (aka as Mito Chondria) had emptied his completly full camel back at mile 4!!! He was a “cooked goose” at mile 8…whats wrong with this young stud???

I’m guessing he got hyponatremic. This can happen even with electrolyte containing fluid. That’s probably a 1.5 L camelbak. that’s a lot of fluid in 4 miles, especially at 73F.

He’s kind of a wimp when it comes to running, but man…he can stay with me with one leg on the bike!

probably needs to start the run more hydrated. being that thirsty, was probably behind before even starting.

also, how was the pace? sometimes if i’m really huffing i feel the need to drink, even when i don’t actually physically need it…just a way to find relief of a run that’s hard.

I’d bet no one starts that dehydrated. The 1500ml finally was all getting into him at 8 miles.

How long did he feel bad after the end of the run. What did he have in the camelbak? what did he have after?

Daniel sweats more than anyone I have ever seen. He went to yoga class and they almost kicked him out because of the “lake” that he created from his sweat pool. He takes in a ridiculous amount of fluid. I, on the other hand, was just fine with a minimum amout of fluid…He downed the whole dang CamelBack in 4 miles!!!

Wow.

What influences how much people sweat? My roommate and I are about the same size, both female, both active. We can go running together and she is drenched at the end, and I’m totally dry. She’ll drink an entire Nalgene bottle during an hour at the gym, I drink nothing. It fascinates me!

He needs to measure his sweat rate.
Weight before (naked) + fluid consumed - weight after (naked.)
I was the guy in the spin class who had the puddle that ran off to the nearby bikes when everyone else had a small, well confined puddle.

You are a camel.
Camels don’t need to drink all that much.
Not everyone on ST is a camel.

Never forget that, Jodi.

I store my extra water here:

L-Dog you killed him on the bike the previous day. I Guess he is not used to those long Kona work outs that the L-Dog has planned.

But I can’t believe he drank that much water.

Why weren’t you looking out for your buddy? You took him on a moderately paced 9 mile run in 73 degrees, he shows up wearing a camelback, and you let him wear it?

That’s pretty one way.

For you folks talking about measuring the guys sweat rate and whatnot, get a grip. Bringing a camelback- let alone sucking it dry in four miles- on a run like that is basic boneheadedness.

The reason I suggested he measure his sweat rate is that I agree with you that he must be overdrinking.

I figgered, but still. Forget the sweat measurement, save some time. Smack him in the head, tell him to find his common sense, and move on.

A camelback on a 9 mile run. In 73 degrees. Good grief.

I’d bet no one starts that dehydrated. The 1500ml finally was all getting into him at 8 miles.
well, that depends on how many adult beverages were had the night before.

Hell, I might take something on a 9 mile run when it’s 95+F and I’m old, slow and sweat like a pig. Otherwise, no way. Besides who wants to carry the damned thing.
(When I used to take spin classes, I was always the winner, by several multiples, in the puddle contest. Mine ran over to the other bikes and made a complete mess. I took a bath towel.)

Ok, let the man himself answer to all those allegations and questions…

No, I didn’t drink 1.5l in 4miles, I drank 1.25 during the 75min of running. Yes I drink alot in the pool, on the bike, and while running. And no, that thing wasn’t empty at mile 4, in fact it still had some in it at the end, but after 4miles it felt already empty and last week when it was 85F+ in that canyon I was in big trouble at the end of the run. It was during last weeks run when the 750ml bottle was empty after 30min that I swore myself never ever f#ing ever to run in that canyon without a Camelback again. I do as I say.

And yes, I was already tired after 6hrs of riding on Wed, a Thursday AM high intensity bike session, followed by a PM run. Friday 90min easy bike. Saturday 3hrs with 1.5hrs very hard. Yes, I was tired and I’m sure that might have contributed a little to it.

But hey, if anybody is working for Cytomax and wants to sponsor me, I’m all over that product. I usually add some additional electrolytes to it though. (and to those that already think I’m adding way to much salt, no. I’m also thirsty when I consume less electrolytes). You won’t find many other triathletes that would be sipping on your product as frequently as I do.

For those that talk about sweat rate. In a lab setting, room temp 72F -74F. with two big fans blowing on me, ~47.5min TT all out, avg. 369W, NormP 375W I drank 1.5liter of water and weighed still around 1kg less at the end. Yes, some of it is weight lost besides water, but I do have a high sweat rate which is cool for short to medium Time Trial efforts but kind of sucks in the heat, especially if I’m not used to training in such an environment. It’s tough living near the beach here with year round comfortable temperatures. Don’t feel sorry for me, I think I’m gonna make it, but it’s though

And yes, I was also a pro drinker when I was younger. seven double shots of tequilla plus some SoCom and a couple of beers made some very very bad memories, but that’s another story…

That’s a lot of work. That might ‘splain it Lucy.’
You might try a little prehydration. You might want to rehydrate better after those big workouts.

that is a lot of watts. But i guess doing the Volume that the L-Dog does got to you on the Run. good thing you didn’t do the Pier to pier swim or you would have been toast!!!
