Ready to try something different than my Nathan handheld bottles. Which hydration belts do you like. Looking for a 2 bottle, small storage pouch, and a gel flask. Fuel Belt, Nathan, Amphipod, or ??? Would you use this setup for a 50 mile ultra? Plan is only for training… but just in case.
I have used a Fuel Belt hydration belt in the past and much prefer a vest. I use the Nathan HPL 020 and I really like it, the belt had a tendency to ride up. I’ve used the vest in ultras and basically any training run I may need water. Using it in training helps me get comfortable having it on, and it does not change anything when I do not have it on. It holds everything I need and does not move around too much for me.
i’ve used several and can’t stand them at all. They always ride up funny. I’m a much bigger fan of running in a camelbak. If you flip it upside down and suck all the air out of it before you put it on, it keeps it from sloshing around.
oh, you’re an ultra runner… All you need is some rope and some old maple syrup bottles. Just tie them one the belt loops of your cut-offs and go
I really like my fuel belt. If i wear it low on my hips and really cinch it down, it never bothers me. I used to run with a small camelbak but it would chafe me like crazy.

^^This^^
I have a four bottle (usually only use two a time) and wear it low also. Never had a problem. Use it mainly on hot days during longer runs. Lots of colors to choose from if you’re into that too.
The new FuelBelt line is designed not to ride up on you. They are super easy to grab bottles and offer all the accessories you mentioned as add-on’s so you can carry whatever you want. Check them out, you won’t be disappointed.
I run with a Fuel Belt almost all the time. Vary between 2 bottles and 4 bottles depending on length of run and the temp/humidity. The first belt I had fit great a first, the after I lost a few pounds it was a little loose and started to ride up. I bought the next size down (which at first seem too small) but it never rides up.
for gel, I either stuff a pack or two in attached pouch or attach a reusable bottle that sits in a case with a belt clip.
I can’t comment on whether it would be a good set-up for a 50 mile ultra as my runs are in the 12-18 km range.
If you can hold on for a couple more weeks these guys are coming out with an awesome belt. They have them all ready to go, they’re just waiting on bottles to arrive. You can order online as well. I used the single bottle and gel flask holder belt at Ironman arizona last year.
Sorry for the kinda silly video, but it shows the belt very well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=359Mi8tPyHc
They also have different rear and front pieces that you can join together. Check out their website here: http://www.ultraspire.net and once the bottles arrive you’ll be able to buy them online here: http://www.ultraspirestore.com
We use the Electron front, and the Fusion and Ion rear attachments.

you just blew my mind
Thanks! I’m going have to check them out more… like what I see!
I had a 4 bottle Fuel and now use a 4 bottle Nathans. I like the Nathans better because I can usually adjust it once after I start running and it’s doesn’t move and feels good for over 2 hours. I’m not sure how that Ultraspire belt would work since there’s no simple “velcro” closure for on the run adjustments. My weight fluctuates weekly and with different clothes not sure how practical that would be. Although perhaps that velcro loop is easy enough to access full run to cinch tighter if needed. The modularity looks pretty cool as it would be nice to go from 2 to 4 bottles to a big bottle to just race belt with gel pouch with one belt.
Another vote for fuel belt…I hate the feeling of anything sloshing or riding on my back
.
I might be in the minority, but I have an Amphipod and love it (except for the green bottle color). I bought a 4-bottle version but normally only use 2 bottles, but since it’s modular I can add those 2 bottles back any time I want. I can also turn the front-mounted bottles sideways which, for me, puts them at a more natural angle in the front. In the back, rather than be spread out , 2 bottles tend to settle in the small of my back, and then don’t bounce much. I’ve also never lost a bottle that was secured in place, and I think I’ve only ever dropped one twice in quite a bit of running. You could probably fit like 10 bottles on it if you wanted to.
Does this actually work for you? I sometimes don’t mind the sloshing because in my head it helps keep keep my back cooler and I’m not always down with weight on my hips for a long run.
I use an iFitness 2 bottle belt. I’ve tried Fuel belts, and Nathan’s, and both ended up bouncing. For some reason, the iFitness one doesn’t do that on me. It rides tight, doesn’t slosh, and I can add bottles to it if I need to.
I have one of the smaller camelbak models. When it’s secured, it basically doesn’t move from my upper back (resting about 6-7 inches above my waist line). It easily holds 48 ounces without sloshing, or less if you push the air out of the bladder when closing it. There’s a large elastic pocket on the back that is deep enough to securely hold a full 24 ounce bottle. I use that pack + bottle setup with one hand held (a total of ~100 fluid oz), and I’m good for 5 hours on the trail.
I have the 3L adventure racing model with ample storage for a day out. Currently I use it to run home from work 15k. I usually only use. 1L of water. And sometimes fill more if I want some added weight.
last summer i went with a Fuelbelt two bottle revenge and regret it. the belt isn’t as elastic as my old one from several years ago, so when i cinch it around my hips it ends up riding up every time i stride, since there is no give in the material. drives me crazy, constantly having to push it back down and readjust, or try to ignore the bouncing. if i cinch it above my hips i feel it impinge on my diaphragm/breathing. the only thing worse is being dehydrated on a long run on a hot day so i suffer through it. incidentally, i’m 6’0" 160lbs. can’t help but wonder if they actually designed it primarily for the overweight Breast Cancer Walk participants i see wearing them a lot.
rather than runners.
on the other hand, the bottle cages on the Revenge are awesome. rock solid bottle holding, but easy in easy out with one hand.
i considered the amphipod, but on long runs around DC over the last couple years i’ve spotted several bright green bottles on the side of the running paths, which suggested to me that its attachment mechanism is not secure.
i probably should try a Nathan one, but right now i’m just bitter and believe there isnt a good waist belt option.
i love the new 2012 Fuel Belt Revenge Series ( i have the 4 bottle). it doesn’t ride up on me and it’s easy one handed entry.
