Hunting Season

Hunting season is here. In the morning, my dad and I are taking my 12 year old for his first deer hunt where he gets to do the hunting. It has been super warm here so not sure how good the hunting will be, but fun nonetheless.

Wednesday I am heading up to South Dakota to get pheasant hunting. I have a an 8 month old Wirehaired pointing griffon that will be joining me which should be interesting. This is my first time training an upland dog and it has been fun to see the progression she has made. I am going into it with no expectations other than her getting to chase some wild birds.

Has anyone had any luck so far this year or any hunting trips you are looking forward to?

Don’t hunt as much as I used to, but definitely need to this year as the venison freezer is almost empty. I’m fortunate to have my own land an hour away so will just head up there. Jealous of your pheasant hunt as that’s one of my bucket list items.

I only chase upland as I enjoy the dog work.

Headed to northern Wisconsin for the week to chase grouse and woodcock. Probably a few days in Iowa for pheasants later in the season and maybe Kansas late season but that is still up in the air.

looking forward to getting the 7 year old out and seeing what our 6 month old pup has after bird intro work this summer.

A new puppy has a way of making everything super exciting again!

What is your son’s rifle chambered for?

I don’t hunt, but a friend of mine who does is incredibly excited as he got an elk tag here on Vancouver Island which apparently is very difficult (I think it’s done through a lottery system and is highly regulated and limited).

Considering where he’s going (terrain wise) and when, it sounds like a pretty extreme adventure. Spending days in the costal mountains up here in late October is not for the faint of heart. It’s where a few seasons of that survivalist show Alone was filmed.

Good luck and have fun. Growing up in Kansas - hunting was a yearly ritual. Pheasant and quail, and deer. It’s been years since I hunted anything. Even after moving to Colorado, I never got into big game hunting. I don’t have an issue with it but I don’t want to kill an elk, moose, bear or whatever.

Good luck! What a great experience for him to be out with three generations of guys.

Deer Hunting Season for me means there are I places I don’t go, no matter how much Orange I wear, after a friend of mine had an arrow whiz past him on his mountain bike down here in the Pine Barrens - and he was lit up Orange for JUST that reason; didn’t help

Don’t go running on sandy trails
Please stick to the streets and roads that you’re used to

Sounds awesome - enjoy. I’ve not gotten out yet. My brother did and brought home a very tasty buck. He was kind enough to share…

Opening Day of rifle season here in GA. I wanted to get out to my stand with kiddo this morning before work, but I was way sleepy when that alarm hit. Hopefully we’ll get him one this season.

Deer and dove season starts September 1 here in SC. Squirrel ducks and quail start Thanksgiving week. Predator trapping runs from December 1 and lasts until the end of February. Turkey scouting starts as soon as the traps are pulled and put up to be ready for turkey season on April 1st.

Basically I’m in the woods almost every day from the first of September until the end of April unless I turkey hunt somewhere out of state in May. Thank goodness I have a very understanding wife.

Oh, they saw him. They just thought that they owned the woods and that he shouldn’t have been on the trail.

I really hope your buddy called the cops and that hunter got the book thrown at them. Rick isn’t wrong in that in archery, there’s no way that someone could confuse a cyclist/mountain biker for game, unless they are truly an imbecile.

I hate shit like that because it gives true sportsmen a bad name, and that hunter is no sportsman.

Needed up not seeing any deer. It has been 90 degrees here since archery season opened on October 1. Then this morning it rained the majority of the time we were out so not the best conditions.

You definitely need to make it to a pheasant hunt at some point. So much fun and an added level of enjoyment watching the dogs work for sure.

Among all the Halloween stuff around this time of year, this is what really scares me

A friend of mine posted this

From the “Weirdest Thing You’ve Seen Thread”

I actually saw a pair of deer standing by the side of the road once, right where the deer crossing sign was

A couple hundred yards down, there was a dead one

“See. Dave THAT’s why there’s a sign here”

Much like driving, hunting and drinking are fine so long as they’re not done together.

We have a nice little cool front and some rain coming through today/tonight. Going to try and get some time in the stand on Tuesday.

I wonder how Little Debbies would fare as tri fuel…

If Little Debbies are good enough for the gods, they are good enough for us.

Yeah, I’m hopeful that sign means that they’re welcome for “post-game” not “pre-” or “mid-”

Unfortunately, I also know the mindset of the locals, so …
