Huge jump into the water to start a swim

Oscar Olsson recently jumped from a 13 meter height into the ocean to start the next swim. Wow. He is also a very good triathlete

He’s got some bulls doing that with pull buoy the size of Alaska stuck in there. Triathlete through and through I guess.

Cliff jumps are crazier than they look - first time you won’t forget.

Wow that was pretty brave…I agree, I would have just jumped with the buoy in my hand

Holy Crap!

OK, I want to do that!

I’d do the jump, just not with a buoy tucked in there or goggles on my face.

This. How did all that stay on I do not know. It is impossible to surf with goggles, let alone jump from that high. Any wave crashing over, or any wipeout, nearly every time, will pull the goggles right off your face.

You should ask that within the feature. I am sure he will answer

I wouldn’t worry about them falling off, I’d worry about an eye injury.
Many years ago I knew of a guy wearing Rx googles to play water polo and he lost sight in one eye due to impact on said goggle.

It was amazing, but not the right decision whatsoever. Lose the goggles and then how do you finish? As well, a jump that high is dangerous. If not done perfectly you’re talking a serious injury or death. It’s breathtaking and crazy that he did this. This is coming from someone that has dove off a 30 foot rock into a river after drinking about 12 beers. Would I do it again? Hell no! Would I jump off a 42 foot rock in a Swimrun? Eff no!!!

Would be interesting for a triathlon to offer such an option. Jump and gain a few minutes or walk, be safer and slower

Risk is all in the eye of the beholder.
I worked for six years at a kids summer camp in ME where we routinely took kids age 12!+ to various waterholes that you had to climb up the rock face to then jump off into the pool below - and some of these necessitated a strong leap out over rocks not just a a gentle step off. Was it a good idea - probably not - but that camp just celebrated 110 years and I don’t believe any reported deaths! I think we called it character building.

Huh. When I saw the video my first reaction was, “where do I sign up?” I love jumping off tall things into the water. Sadly, my local pier is closed so no pier jumping these days… Looks to be about the same height.

There are several of these Swedish SwimRun folks who swim without goggles all the time.

Staffan Björklund talked about it here

Sign up for it next year in Sweden

Don’t get me wrong, it is very cool and watching it makes me want a crack, but I probably wouldn’t do it in a race.

It is a great sport but it prefer regular 2 member team SwimRuns. So if something were going wrong you have a buddy, and maybe a voice of reason prior.

I don’t think that height is that dangerous. I’ve done a 50 foot cliff jump on a guided gorge walking day. The guide said at that height if you don’t enter the water fairly vertical then it’s going to hurt but you’re not going to do yourself any serious damage unless you totally screw up and land nearly horizontally. Guess they’d be pretty knowledgeable as they were all certified and insured. They also said that it gets exponentially more dangerous as the height goes up which makes sense in terms of acceleration. I.e. 60 foot is a lot more than 20% more dangerous than 50 foot.

Agree with others though, no way I’d do it with pull buoy between my legs and goggles on.
