Manny Huerta posting another good showing and moved himself closer to gaining a 3rd US Olympic Spot. The 9th place score moves him from 56th to 50th on the qualifying list. In order for Huerta to earn the spot he will have to beat out 2 Canadians (McMahon 46th, Jones 47th) and dislodge a third place athlete from a nation that has qualified three. France, Germany, Great Britain, Spain are untouchable however likely targets include Atkinson (AUS 33rd), Peieria (POR 31st), a collection of Kiwi’s (Gemmell 52nd and current Oceania champ, also 56th, 62nd & 68th athletes) along with a throng of Russians (37th, 40th, 41st, 48th, 54th, 59th).

One would hope that he’s on that team. I like Manny, seems like a really nice guy. Looks very likely that he can catch McMahon, I’m guessing jones will have a better season next year, but if he doesn’t he should be an easy pass as well. Atkinson had a poor showing this year, he’s really off of form. But if he has a year like '09 he’s going to be a force come the olympics. This would make Peieria and the Kiwi’s likely targets, but wouldn’t the Kiwi’s already be displaced given your list? If Gemmell is 52nd Manny is already rated over him.

Nah, there’s something funky about Gemmell’s qualification relating to the fact that he’s the Oceania champ, but I can’t remember what it is. Check out Mr. ITU’s prev post about the men’s olympic prospects. I want to say that because Gemmell is the Oceania champ he gets an automatic Olympic slot, but that doesn’t sound right to me…Mr. ITU?

He automaticlly gets NZ a 3rd team member if he himself is not already taking a qualifing spot AND they have not already earn’t a 3rd spot. It’s not his outright, it’s the NZ federations. For NZ to retain that spot a kiwi who is not Docherty or Sissions (both have already earnt NZ a spot) must win the Oceania’s in March again or get one of their lower ranked guys up the ranks.
