I went to this last nigh, very cool. These guys are damn funny, and very smart. They had some great tips for newbies - all with the consistent theme - you don’t have to do all the “triathlete” things to be a triathlete.

For example:
You don’t need to shave your legs.
You don’t need to buy a wet suit.
You don’t need to buy a HRM.
You don’t need a tri bike.
You don’t need aero bars.
You don’t need to rush through the transition area.
You don’t need fins, pull buoy’s or paddles to swim.
You don’t need to do track workouts.
You don’t need to wear a cycling jersey.
You don’t need to wash your feet in the transition area.
You don’t need to train yourself to death to have a good race.

They also had some good advice for those that have been doing it for a while, like:

You don’t need to do that last 120 mile ride a week before your Ironman.
Tapering takes time - use it.
Drop caffeine during the taper - you will recover better and when you take the coke of caffeinated gu during the race, you will feel the impact.
Mix up the food you eat during the race - change power bar flavor or gu flavors so you don’t start hating the stuff.
Try going out really hard during the swim - just to see what happens (it may work for you)

They also had some great videos - some classic footage from the 80’s (I swear, back then triathlon was a freak show…), and a great video from IMUSA on things not to do before your Ironman.

It was great. If you have the chance to see these guys speak, don’t miss it.

Personal highlight of the night was when they gave away or auctioned off stuff they had lying around in the garage - including some hats, some socks, some low rise underwear from the underpants run, some dash board hula dancers, a few old race shirts (IM Utah…), and one of Paula’s old transition bags - which is now my new transition bag…

Cathy, thanks for pulling this together.

OK Cathy, you lost the bet. John didn’t put it up on e-bay.

Second bet, I say it will still have the PNF name tag on on it at his next race. You want to take that bet for a beer?

John,

You know that’s the way that we all started off doing triathlons in the late '70’s and early 80’s. Roch & Huddle know the deal. They have been around since the early days. This is an important message that needs to get out to newcomers.

Ha! It will have that name tag on it until it wears out and falls off! Great to see you guys. I am TIRED today since we left my house at 5:00 AM for the airport. There was no shortage of caffeine at 4:30 this morning.
