I was out riding in the mountains yesterday evening after work. I was on a single lane fire road climbing a two mile hill when a car came by me REAL SLOW. First thought is, these folks are being nice to slow down and spare me the dust and dirt from their tires. As I looked up at the car’s occupants to see who these nice folks were, the front passenger leans out the window and points a rifle at me! Now my HR is really racing I’m thinking “Fu#$ this is it, I’m going to be gut shot by some dumbass redneck out in the middle of nowhere!” I begin to swerve left so as to avoid being shot and the car speeds up and over the hill out of sight. Luckily, I get the licence plate. I begin the long decent down to the highway (and cell phone reception) when I see the same car parked alongside the road…trunk open…and the occupants messing with something in the trunk (my likely coffin). I begin feeling around my jersey for something to fight these bastards off with and start scanning the side of the road for a stick or broken bottle (something) in case they try to jump me…I pass them and as I do they yell and fake like they’re throwing something at me. I duck and swerve and TT my ass off for the next 10 minutes until cell reception kicked back in. I call 911.
I live and train out in the incorporated areas of my region. Normally it takes the cops at least 30-60 minutes to respond to anything so I’m thinking this incident is not over and these guys may just come down after me. So, there I am standing behind a clump of trees and bushes talking to 911 when all of a sudden two Sheriff’s cars come rolling by me lights blazing towards the area where the incident occurred. I tell the dispatcher that I saw the cops and he says…yea got lucky they were just down the road at another call. To make a long story short, they catch the SOB who pointed the gun at me. I identify the guy, make a taped statement to the Deputy and ride home thinking now THAT WAS SWEET JUSTICE!!!
Deputy tells me the crime is Assault 2nd Degree which is a serious felony in my state. The guy is going to jail (at least for the night). Turns out these guys were camping up in the forest, drinking and decided to “just mess around with me.”
Good for you. Pointing a gun at someone is so f-ing wrong. If you were carrying you’d be justified to shoot that Mf’er. Any jackass who owns a gun and doesn’t understand the responsibility associated with it deserves to sit in a cell. Damn this pisses me off. I hate human trash.
it’s these same idiots that will buzz by inches from you, “just to mess with you”. all it would take is you swerving a few inches to the left to miss something in the road, and you’re stain under their tire.
or they’ll ease up beside you and scream and scare the sh** out of you, “just to mess with you”. you might loose control and crash.
or they throw something at you, not really meaning to hit you, “just to mess with you”.
i say take no pity on these assho**s
maybe they’ll do some time. i hate the fact that we have to sometimes take abuse from such as these in fear that they might do worse next time.
So, these guys pointed a gun at you, and you then VOLUNTARILY rode by them later??!! Did going the other way or pulling off (and cowering in the trees like a baby) until they were gone ever cross your mind? Even if it added hours to your get-home time, this is an easy decision to make.
Don’t know if you’re religious but if you are you better send one up. There are some real fools in this world. Ditto Pooks except the hate, just pure utter disdain for dumbasses like that and yeah you may want to leave that route alone for a while. Sounds like that may go to trial.
Where I went by these guys was part of a long fast decent there were no other road or trail options. I don’t know why I chose to run the gauntlet rather than hide in the bushes or turn back up the hill. Fight or Flight decisions are easy to second guess. I’m just glad it worked out.
I’m definitely taking some time away from that route for awhile. Brings up an interesting question though…does anyone carry a gun or some other form of personal protection.
Glad you are ok man - I had a former work colleague die (we were HWP motor cycle officers in Australia) when a guy pulled a tire iron out of the passenger window and leveled it at my colleague (they had just done an armed robbery and we were chasing them) - who, thinking it was a firearm, lay down his bike at 60 mph as the only way to avoid being “shot”
Two broken legs, a broken pelvis, broken arm and a lot of skin missing was his legacy - but he lived.
The MF’er that did it - a 15 yo kid in a stolen car - 6 months in a juvie detention center - which is really better living conditions than he had at home.
more than that when they were finally caught - not to mention a few bullet holes through the rear window and both front seat headrests - how they did NOT get shot is a mystery.
Pull a gun or anything resembling one one a cop - you get what you deserve
