How to tell if the BB is bad?

It has maybe 7k mile on it. not sure what type it is. The bike is a 2003 felt s32. The reason I bring it up is that while cleaning it today there is some play in the crank. if it move the top on the chain ring there is lateral play in it. I am sure there is supposed to be some but i kind of have a lot. how much is too much?

I am no BB expert, but just on general principals, it is time to retire that puppy. 7K miles is a lot of miles.

I don’t there should be any lateral play.

I have the same type of bike. When I took the cranks off and spun the BB, it was really rough and dry. It probably was for some time too. I had it replaced at about 9k (5500 miles)

If I remember correctly it is an ISIS 68X108. Measure from end to end in mm to comfirm the second number. I’m pretty mechanically inclined but I still had the bike shop replace it, they have all of the right tools.

next logical question is what do i replace it with?

I thinks the bike shop put the same type of BB back on it, they came through for me when nobody else could. They are a very good Felt distributer.

For a couple of dollars I’d have your local bike shop replace it for you. More than likely they will have to order the part too.

I saw in another post that SuperDave likes this one.

Here is one from Nashbar. They have a cheaper one there too but why skimp on this part.
