How to keep short sleeved wetsuit from filling with water?

My family and I will soon be headed off for our second Relay Triathlon. My 19-yo son swims the first part, and is looking for a way to keep his short-sleeved wetsuit from filling with water. It gets in the sleeves, apparently.

Duct Tape? Velcro? Anybody have any luck here? Thanks.

First of all, some water always gets inside a wetsuit. That’s normal. If your son is getting so much water in that it’s causing problems, it suggests that perhaps the suit is too big.

Sorry I wasn’t being very helpful.

Where a long sleeved suit

Kidding aside, is the suit fitting him properly? Is he very slim/slight in the upper body? It may be that the suit is not fitting him properly and/or is too big. You may want to check into renting a wetsuit. Many shops that sell wetsuits also have rental programs and there is also wetsuitrental.com

Hope this helps.

damn that was my answer…

Not trying to be a smart ass but is the wet suit designed for swimming? In otherwords is it a Tri specific wetsuit? Scuba and body/surf boarding wetsuits are not made to swim in and will bind and fill with water when you try to swim in them

attach pieces of velcro behind his ears, connect to other pieve stitched to his elbows…and then wrap the entire body in duct tape…air tight and amazingly streamlined!

That was my thought when I read “short sleeved” as opposed to “sleeve-less” I have seen surfing or water skiing wetsuits with short sleeves. I can’t recall a triathlon wetsuit with short sleeves

Thanks for the replies. He’s a pretty well-built kid–190 lbs, 6’1". The suit seems fairly snug, but we’ll check it out some more.

Not to be flip, but wetsuits are supposed to fill with water. That’s why they are called wetsuits. Otherwise, they’d be drysuits.

Have him go sleeveless. Unless the water is really cold (low 60’s or below), he won’t miss having sleeves and he’ll probably swim faster. Plus he can show off his “guns” to the young ladies.

Good luck.
