How to correctly place metatarsal pads?

I’ve had some metatarsal pain under the joint of my second toe for the last couple of weeks so I purchased some Spenco metatarsal arch cushions. I’m not sure what the cause is but I don’t think that it is a stress fracture… There is no pain on the top and it is only somewhat sore when I push hard on the bottom. It hurts most when toeing off barefoot (and shoes to a slightly lesser extent), enough that I limp sometimes. I did an 8 mile trail run today which made it pretty sore (time to have a swim-bike emphasis couple of weeks). RICE-ing right now…

Anyway, I don’t think that I am ready to go to the doc, but I was wondering if any of you know how to correctly place the pads. Correct me if I’m wrong but you don’t want the orange part of the pad to be directly under sore area, rather back further so as to lift and support the metatarsal arch and lift dropped heads?

Any advice about the pads or the pain in general would be much appreciated…

I am no expert by any means, but do use metatarsal pads for a neuroma. I find that placing them just behind the ball of my foot, but not too far down that they are in the arch, alleviates any pain by relieving the pressure caused by my forefoot strike when I run.
