How tight do I need to go?! (Speedo/jammer)

I use to just go off of waist size. 34. But now I’m getting more and more into swimming and have read that smaller is the way to go. Someone recommended that I go a size or two smaller… But idk if I’m going to accidentally nuder myself. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m a 5’11 male and 20 years young. Thin and modestly lean. I’m also going to move away from Lycra and get some polyester swim brief if that matters.

I guess my question is, Would it greatly reduce drag if I go smaller?

As long as your suit is tight to the skin (takes a little effort to pinch the suit and pull away from your skin) you should be alright for training. I wear size 32 waist pants and use a 28 for swim suits. Obviously if you’re racing you wanna keep it pretty tight (I use a 26 for competition), but after a certain point I think it’s some weird obsession male swimmers have with wearing the smallest possible speedo.

Also polyester suits will stretch less than lycra so keep that in mind, but they also last ages.

I wear tight green speedos. Also young, lean and fit. Rocking the speedo is just doing other people a favor. Get a small one.

I’d be more worried you might neuter yourself, because if you’re wearing a speedo you can be sure you’re already more nuder than pretty much every other option. If it goes up your builders crack you’ve gone too small.

What he said!!!

I’m older, female and appreciate the favour:-) No baggy speedos no matter how lean and fit - that ain’t doing nobody no favours…

Get a small one.

Try a 30.

Yep, you give us all something to laugh at!

^^^^^^^^^^ This if it is for training or just knocking around. If it is for racing go as small as you can squeeze onto your body. I had a 24 paper suit back in the day. Had to take it off between events.

I rocked a 26…

I would say try a 30. I never thought going super small was going to give you any exceptional advantage.

I had a 32 waist, would train in a 30, and race in a 28.

Not sure if your post is real or not.

For training, what is the marginal advantage of having a very small suit other than crushing your nuts.

Seems most good swimmers wear drag suits anyway, so what be uncomfortable. Obviously, you don’t want your suit to be too baggy like board shorts, because that may interfere with correct positioning in the water, but a little more drag just makes you work harder.
