How slow a walk pace is 13:00 per mile on a flat course?

I have no frame of reference.

Something like 4.5 mph I think…kj
.

Really slow
.

Well, as a run it is really slow, as a walk it is fast. Anything over 3.5 - 3.7 mph is going to be a very fast walk. To get below 15 minute miles walking you need to step it off pretty good.

Well, technically, that’s a pretty brisk walking pace. Slow running pace, but brisk walk, most definitely.

That’s a pretty good rate for a walk. When I take the Boy Scouts on a 10 or 20-mile hike, I always figure 3 mph, or 20 min./mi. And, we usually go slower.

David James Elliott might be able to clue you in pretty good on that one.

That’s about a 5:45 marathon. I know because that was my pace at IM Florida a couple of years ago. And I still could hardly walk the next day.

Leisurely walking is about 20 min per mile. To get to 13 min per mile you will probably need to have your elbow bent–running style–rather than at your sides regular walk style.

Thanks all.

You making contingency plans for IMFL?
If so, its damn near impossible to hold that walking pace when you are not able to jog any longer in an IM. Put it this way, if you could walk 13 min/mile, you could likely muster up an 11 min/mile jog. The effort is about the same.

if you plan on walking some of the IM, I would budget 15 min/mile if you need to walk. Having said that, most people manage to drop it down to 11 or 12 min/mile by mixing up each mile with walking some and running some during each mile.

Nice sig…

Agreed, A 13 min walk is harder to hold than a 11-12 minute jog. I “played” with this during my “death march” at IMWI. I made much better progress walking 15 and jogging 11 or less than trying to hold speeds lower than 15-14:30 while walking.

I think you’ll find you have to step lively to maintain that pace. It is a pretty sprightly pace. If you can hold that though, while walking, that is pretty darn good.

Thanks, I know it’s a bit verbose but I like it.

I’m kinda disappointed he didn’t mention his “Mr. Phriday Phun Future Ironman and I have a liscense plate to prove it…”

How slow a walk pace is 13:00 per mile on a flat course?

I think I have found someone I can talk smack to!

Make that Phuture Ironman

(I like the sig too)

Not for IMFL but I was thinking that, thanks for confirming.

If you are walking in an Ironman, it aint gonna be brisk. You can count on 3 mph max or 20 min per mile. Put it another way, if you cover the first 20 miles in 3 hours (6.667 mph or 9 min per mile), and if you start walking, you will finish that marathon in just over 5 hours.

Think about that for a second. All you have to do is walk 6 miles and you go from a sub 4 hour Ironman marathon (reasonably solid and usually top 15% of the field) to >5 hour marathon. Trust me, I’ve walked it in from mile 18 in an Ironman and ended up taking 5:25. This from the same guy who ran 3:03 in Boston in the same year. Walking in Ironman = bad. Keep shuffling at all costs
