How Protected is the Swim Area at Sandy Hook, NJ

The wife is doing the women’s tri next Sunday, about the time that Katia starts churning up the water on the East coast. I assume that the swim is on the protected West side of the “hook” but it still looks pretty exposed. Wondering what the odds are that the swim will be either very rough or canceled.

The cove where the swim is held is completely sheltered (it’s basically in the vicinity of Fort Hancock):

If the storm continues as it’s projected, there could be 10’+ surf on the ocean & it could be flat as a pancake on the other side. Depending on the swell, you sometimes have it wrapping a little bit around the northern end, but never any swell where the swim is held.

Hang onto your seat though, the Danskin races are *something *to be seen

Thanks.

Care to explain “Hang onto your seat though, the Danskin races are *something *to be seen :)” ?

My wife has several years of experience, but first time at this race. Is the above warning for me or her?

Thanks.

Let’s just say, I get the urge to hold hands & start singing this at the start:

My wife did the Danskin NJ a few years back right after Hurricane Hugo and you will have swells… at that time, 3ft. high, not super difficult, but definitely enough to push you around. Obviously, the more experienced/comfortable swimmers will have a major advantage in conditions like that. Just make sure you get there really early… parking is a hazzle and getting there is not easy… one way in, one way out, so plan for it to be a long, all-day event. But it is very well run.

Fixed that for you. They will cancel the swim.

I hope not, but I fear you’re correct. I just noticed that the race has “swim angels” that are in the water to help the weak swimmers. My wife is going to be pissed if this turns into a duathlon.

The Danskin swim start is a pretty special place to be as a volunteer or spectator. That holding pen nervous energy is incredible. What makes it all work, even with the swim angels and an armada of safety support, is the view of the out and back swim course from the holding pen and start. Totally legit swim distance. Further than some local co-ed sprint triathlons. Seeing the nervous energy on one side of the buoys building, and watching the celebration of the swim exit on the other side just yards away, is something I will never forget. You could not be more protected from a NE or SE storm in a swim. But you are pretty exposed as a spectator since it is a little barrier island of sand, so be prepared. You are going to have a great husband/wife triathlon moment!

I haven’t been out there, but I heard that the hook got hit pretty hard by Irene (like it was mostly underwater). What’s the status of the roads, beaches, parking lots, etc?
