After having plantar fasciitis for over 2 yrs I’m giving the Graston technique a try. A local sports PT clinic just started using the technique within the last 6 mo. I asked the PT if I could still run and he said it was o.k. I reported that I was running 30-40 mi per week right now and he didn’t tell me to stop.
My question: For others who are having/had Graston how much running were you doing while undergoing tx? I’m obviously willing to do what ever it takes to achieve the best outcome (even if it means little or no running). I’m doing tx twice per week. Is it better to run before or after tx? Any advice/comments would be appreciated. Thanks-- J
My guy, who had treated gold medal olympic skaters, said I could do any running or other things I wanted. Often I ran later that day and it felt great. By the way, I had exceptional success with it, so I think you’ll be very glad you did it.
Thanks Gary, that’s great news. I’ve just completed my second treatment. I’m trying to be careful and probably won’t drastically increase mileage during the next several weeks as I attempt to get back to 100% again. A couple of notes for those who might be interested. 1: it isn’t nearly as painful as some have indicated (at least for me). I would describe the scraping as ‘mild’ discomfort. 2: I’m surprised at how sore I get after treatment. Immediately afterwards it feels great then the next day I’m extremely sore.
I never had it for PF, but some other leg injuries. Worked great for me. And, I kept up with my normal training. In one case, that was low mileage due to a sprain. In another, it was usual mileage with hard runs, and that was a strain related injury.
I have run the next day with Graston treatments. you can run that day. i run in the am and usually have treatments late afternoon. I have had Graston done on my hips, PF and high ankle sprain type of injury. Trust your PT it is effective. On your PT and ankle stuff the first couple sessions can be painful but you notice the difference pretty quick.

Thanks Scott-- as I do plan to keep my normal mileage. Scot, I really liked what you said about trusting the PT. You are spot on as usual.
Perhaps that’s a few differences with tendons versus muscles, as mine was muscular. It was extremely painful as he worked “to the bone”, but it did not hurt at all afterwards and the next day. I had quite a bit of bruising as well, but that was not an issue that deterred me. It sounds as though you are making great progress, so best of luck!
