How many of you all train with a wetsuit in a pool?

Never done it myself but have heard of people doing it. Does anyone train with their westsuit in a pool??? I know the company recommendations are to never wear it in chlorine but I wouldnt think that once in awhile would do any damage???

I do not for two reasons. 1. It will void the warranty or exchange policy of most manufacturers. 2. I get hot enough when training in the pool, wearing a wetsuit would be too much.

I doubt a very infrequent dip or two into a chlorine pool would hurt it much. Make sure it’s cleaned real well after and I’m sure it would be okay.

I wouldn’t do it personally. Probably more because I’d look like a total numbnut at the pool than anything else.

Exactly, I dont want to be “that guy”.

I have the past few years once when the outside pool first opens (I use my old wetsuit now). Mainly to remind myself how “tight” they are. I wash it twice when I’m done.

I’ve done it a few times over the years in the week leading up to a wetsuit legal race just to be sure it still fits
Always rinse throughly afterwards.
Be very careful on your turns as you will approach the walls much faster than normal!

We use our wetsuits in the pool at work on an almost daily basis. I won’t say that it doesn’t break it down faster than a wetsuit that never sees a pool, but we haven’t noticed them falling apart any faster than expected.
Make sure you do a good fresh-water rinse.

Did it once to test a new wetsuit. Looked a total fool. Never again.

Depends on the pool.

We have an unheated outdoor saltwater 60m pool that I frequently wear my wetsuit in. For 6am starts early & late in the season its too cold without. And yes, most saltwater (public) pools are slightly chlorinated.

In an indoor pool? Not chance…call it the Fred factor.

I only do it once for a new wetsuit to check the fit. Reasons not to do it on a regular basis:

  1. Dork factor
  2. Slightly shortens suit life (this is not a big issue…QR used to make the Warm Jane, a sleeveless legless wetsuit for women who got too cold in the pool).
  3. You get a longer glide after the pushoff, so it’s less ideal for both pool racing and open water simulation.
  4. A wetsuit is it’s own version of “pull buoy addiction.”
  5. You’ve got to lug a wetsuit back a forth to the pool, and constantly rinse it.
  6. Did I mention the dork factor?

I see a few folks wearing them this time of year where I train
Outdoor pool with water temp around 75
Makes sense to get in at least one session with the wetsuit if you plan to race it.

never done it myself, but i can’t wait for our community pool to open up and i plan to use it there on the colder days
.

There are a couple of reasons to swim with your wetsuit. Once in a while.

A wetsuit completely changes your swimstroke…A few hundred meters of a wetsuit swim will save raceday surprises.

It’s also tight, constricting and again totally alters your swim. Recognising it and not being affected by it will make for a better race day.

If the water is above 70f, wearing a wetsuit is silly.

Well it’s certainly not Nineteen’s recommendation. Occasional usage in the pool is OK, in fact it’s encouraged, for the following reasons:

  1. To get used to wearing a wetsuit

  2. To make sure that you have your wetsuit fitted to you properly.

  3. To practice taking the wetsuit off quickly.

  4. To get used to the different body position that you have in the water while wearing the suit and the slightly different stroke mechanics associated with this.

When finished take the wetsuit in the showers with you and give it a thorough rinsing in freshwater and then when you are at home hang it up to dry right away.

Hope this helps.

I will do this for 4 or 5 swims prior to a wetsuit race (if I can’t get to open water). I can usually only last a little while in the pool with the suit though and I am often unzipping it and letting fresh cool water flow through. . . it is way to hot in the pool for me.

The outdoor pool at my gym is not heated in the winter and I’d estimate it in the mid-to-low 50’s right now. I plan on getting the zipper on my old wetsuit repaired so I can swim out there during my build to IMSG. Hopefully it will get me a little accustom to the cold water.

Thank you.

One point I forgot to make. Obviously, depending on the pool water temperature, it’s going to get, warm to hot, faster in the pool wearing the wetsuit, than in cooler open water, so please be careful with this and use some common sense. In warmer water pools you will not be able to crank out huge hard sets, so leave it at testing for a few hundred meters.

We have a 50m outdoor pool where I’m from, that is often cold (70 or less). Putting the wetsuit on and swimming 2K is good practice for the real thing. I’ve never had any issues with chlorine on the suit. I just make sure it gets a good rinse in the showers when I’m done.

I won’t wear mine in a pool but today I biked with one for 10 miles on my trainer and then tried running on the treadmill but that only lasted a half mile. I did sweat ALOT!
