How long to take off after 70.3?

Finished Racine on Sunday and next big race is Sept 1. I might do a couple of sprints in there just to mix it up.

My calfs and hamstrings are a little tight but nothing hurts. I could swim or bike easily. Run would be a little stiff right now, but not painful.

How long do you all typically take off to start “official training” after a half? Thanks.

After Buffalo Springs I took Mon and Tue off, did a light spin on Wed (lingering soreness in one hamstring), then was back on normal training on Thu. I basically missed a workout in each sport. That was just me.

Usually take the next day fully off, unless I feel exceptionally rested. Then get back into my workout schedule over the next few days all easy efforts. After a week I’m fully back in nthe saddle of training.

Raced Lake Stevens on Sunday… Was going to swim yesterday but didn’t have time before my massage, so I’ll swim today. Light bike tomorrow and another swim on Thursday. I’ll probably try a light 3 mike run on Thursday night or Friday morning.

A day before zone 2 cycling, swimming by the end of the week, running again a week after the race. Right back to full volume after 5 days.

I will swim the day after for 20 min or for recovery. The rest of the week I just do whatever I feel like and don’t do any specific training at all. Usually I just ride my road bike without my the head unit, so no power or HR monitoring. After a week of this I am ready to get back into my normal training routine both physically and mentally.

I’ll probably swim only the next day, then easy bike and run the following 2 days, then work into some normal workouts. I have a Olympic 2 weeks after my HIM in August, so I’ll probaly get in a few harder workouts by the following weekend, then recover again before the next race.

I never feel like I gain much from a day completely off. I’d rather at least get a short swim in. I think you recover better with some blood flow and being able to warm up the muscles then stretch them out.

Tuesday feels a lot worse than Monday for me. I usually go for an easy run Monday, walking breaks acceptable. Tuesday off, fatigue sets in and I sleep like a baby. Wednesday back to normal.

Depends on how beat up I am and when my next event is. But an easy swim or bike will typically happen before running again. My recovery is generally dependent upon how my run went. If I can run well in the half, then I’m much more beat up than when I’ve resorted to jog/shuffle mode.

Soooo…usually I take 1-3 days off after a half. At the end of the season I may take 1-2 weeks off.

take time off? Day after june lake 70.3 I did a 6 mile trail run with 2000’ of climbing. There are some races with doubles (70.3 day before, olympic next) where people do both.

i admit it…i’m a giant pussy for not wanting to workout every single day of my life.

Hey Nick- I typically don’t take any days “Off” but I will do one to three days of recovery work. It is different for everyone and often different for every race. Did you cramp up a bit? Did you hydrate and re-hydrate well? How was your overall fitness leading into the day? There are a lot of factors. Listen to you body.

I typically run 5 miles easy the day after and try to get in the pool for some drill work. Second day is usually where the soreness kicks in for me as well so it is the day where you have to “listen” the most. After Galveston 70.3, my quads were shot and I couldn’t get much work in on day two or three. I raced Racine this weekend and felt pretty darn good today so I jumped back in to full workouts.

That being said, the mental component plays a role as well. Are you mentally ready to get back to the grind? If you feel flat your first few workouts even if you feel good physically, maybe a few extra easy days isn’t a bad idea.

If you go by a set number of days, you will likely guess wrong. Just my two sense, hope the ambiguous answer helps!
