I am training for an HIM in late Oct. I currently swim 2x week - 1x1.2 miles and 1x0.6 miles. I will be on a family vacation in Europe for the last 2 weeks in Aug and am unlikely to have access to a pool. If, worst case, I have to take a 14-15 day break, is it likely to affect my conditioning in any significant way?
You are swimming about 3000 yards per week? Do you come from a swimming background? What are your goals for the him?
When I take 2 weeks off swimming, it takes me 4 weeks to get back to where I was. That is swimming 12k or more though.
I suggest increasing your yards after you return from vacation. Maybe try doubling to 6k.
There are a lot of pools in Europe. Every village paractically has one. Also many public pools outside!
I haven’t been practically swimming in 7 months because of an army deployment abroad, but I’m still participating in the national AG championships in two weeks on my R’n’R. Have to start with 10sec less pace per 100m than normally. On my last leave I participated in a Sprint race and my swimming pace was 4-5 sec less per 100m than year before.
Two weeks is nothing that you wouldn’t be able to fix.
I hadn’t been in the water for almost a month and did a 1 mile OW race last Sunday. Swam ~30 minutes w/o a wetsuit. I dunno if I was any faster before my break but I do know my lats were sore and that never happened when I was on top of it. I think you should bounce back quickly if it’s only been 2 weeks.

Ummm, but maybe you weren’t swimming very hard before, if your lats were “never” sore. They should be sore after a hard swim workout!!!
Look up a pool on SwimmersGuide.com. I swim all the time when I travel to Europe. There are tuns of pools there.
2 weeks could be a concern IMO, since your volume is already fairly low, it could have a significant impact depending on the rest of your training, your goals and you swimming background.
However, if your training normally just consists of swimming 1 - 1/2 miles stright without and interval/threshold trianing. I don;t think 2 weeks will make any difference since you aren’t getting any real gains from your current training other than burning calories and giving your legs and arms some rest while increasing blood flow.
I normally swim around 10,000 m per week. I was sick for a full 4 weeks and did no swimming/biking or running. My swim went from and average of 1:38/100m down to 1:50/100m. I have been back at it for exactly 4 weeks today and I am finally close to what I was. I swim now average around 1:42/100m (my bike and run load is alot heavier now so might account for a slow return to my previous level).
You are not swimming. You are splashing around.
You’ll be fine.

This seems like saying if you are going slower than 10:00/mile pace you aren’t running, you’re jogging. Or if you ride under 16mph you aren’t a cyclist, you’re a biker. Of course he’s swimming, duh!

Ok, so if you go 5 miles a week at 10 mins/mile and take two weeks off how long will it take to “recover” and be back to normal?

Ssssssh. The details of this type of training and recovery are the secret to my racing success!!
I only objected to the tone.

Open Water???
In this crowd, probably best sometimes to talk in terms of %'s instead of actual times.
Some context. I’ve only been swimming these distances for a month or so. Could barely swim 3-4 months ago. So I’m not coming off a significant base. I imagine hours spent splashing/swimming at current level, whatever it is, makes a difference. Hoping any break is a blip so was just curious of others’ experiences. Thanks for all responses.
Probably a pretty big impact did you since your only starting out. Every workout is significant since got ate learning technique. So if will put you a film 2 stems behind on your learning curve plus lost muscle memory. Is day 6 weeks to match where you would have been.
But since you’re staying out, does that even matter?
