How long should a rear wheel last?

Yes.

i deleted the post cause i felt like i was whining. i figure even though it was only a year and a half that is a lot of KM. gonna replace the wheel.

wait, your wheel cashed out in only a year and half?!? I’d start by look into better wheels…

He rode at least 9,000 miles on it.

He rode at least 9,000 miles on it.

That’s not that much…

Agreed 9,000 miles isn’t much. Post is gone, but what part failed? Hub? Rim? Spokes?

What kind of wheel? In what kind of riding conditions? How many annual miles?

I’ve trained on the same Mavic Ksyrium set for 10 years. Probably about 40,000-50,000 miles. Not gentle miles. Rode over countless small potholes and cracks in the pavement, shook the crap out of the bike and me on uprooted pavement, and bunny hopped over how many other road hazards? Wheels never needed truing. Not once. Never lost a spoke. Still have original hubs.

Did you ever have to replace the freehub “bushing”?

No. I think that’s been a problem with newer Ksyrium SL, Cosmis SLS, etc… The new Ksyrium wheels look nothing like mine. I got this wheelset new in 2007 for $500, and an aluminum Cervelo Soloist. That’s been my road setup ever since. Only replaced the cassettes and chains.

Mavic has been using a plastic bushing in their freehub bodies for a very long time.

If you service the Mavic hub regularly the bushing lasts a long time. Certainly longer than their rear rims last if you are not a featherweight.
9000 miles is nothing, my Zipp firecrests are are approaching 60 000km and a quick wipe over and they look like new apart from a few nicks in the stickers.

A wheel that dies that young is not normal.

If it’s a Mavic wheel, you have to replace that cheap plastic bushing in the freehub every so often. At least, I did when I used to ride them.
