I was always taught to not call after 9PM.

9pm is about right. Mostly because i dont like talking on the phone to begin with.

Texting? I’ll hit send at any hour…

It depends who it is and the reason for the call or text.

One friend, 8:15 PM is too late since she and her husband go to bed early and get up at 4 AM.

My friend in San Diego, I can call or text pretty much anytime of day or night and he would answer.

I have a couple friends who will call or text me after 9 PM because that’s when they have availability.

All those rules only apply when you’re calling a landline that can’t be muted.

Call whenever, txt whenever, don’t care. If my phone’s on do not disturb, catch ya when I catch ya.

I don’t expect everyone who may call me to know (or care) what time zone I’m in, or what my daily schedule is.

To reiterate, these rules should have died with the landline.

I have one friend that I know I can call as late as 11 or 12 if I need to. I have only ever done that when we were both working a storm and he needed help.

When me and my friends were younger, I would call as late as 9:00. Now, I try not to to call later than 8:00

Text anytime. Never call unless someone is dead and that can also be anytime

Lot of variables at play - who is it, what’s the subject matter and how urgent, is it weekday or weekend, cell or landline, etc.

Anyone who is not family or close friends: no calls or texts after 9:00 at latest, before 8:00 is better

Family and close friends: generally no cold calls after 10:00, unless I’ve cleared it via text first. Texts can go as late as 11:00 for most of my close folks, especially on weekends.

With a handful of friends, if one of us is tipsy and just watched a good dude movie or a soccer match or a fight or something, silly drunken texts whenever are fine and encouraged. If their drunk ass calls me in the middle of the night, i will pick up because it will probably be hilarious and I can curse at them for waking me up, or there’s a chance there’s a serious problem and they need help and I gotta find my pants, wallet and car keys stat.

So you’re the guy everyone calls to bail them out of lockup?

I think he helps them bury the dead hookers.

Why kill them first?

Text anytime. Never call unless someone is dead and that can also be anytime

This… what heathen actually uses a telephone these days to general chit chat? If someone is ever calling me, without at least texting first “hey can I call?”, it has to be an emergency.

That said - you can text me any time and if my phone is not on DND mode, I’ll respond.

Those are not mutually exclusive activities.

Honestly, given the fact I have a law degree and a few dissolute friends, I’m surprised I never have gotten the “bail me out of jail” call.

I have gotten a call from a friend who got drunk, lost his wallet and jacket, was trying to walk home after bar time when it was -17 degrees and windy, and realized he might actually get bad frostbite or even freeze to death.

And one from a friend going through some tough personal stuff, got a middle of the night drunk call, I knew this person had access to car keys, pills, a handgun, and I just got scared for them. Probably totally overreaction, but I made up a lame story about how I had missed dinner and now that they’d woken me up I was starving and I was going to punish them by making them accompany to a 24 hr diner so I could get something to eat. I just wanted to lay eyes on them.

It’s random stuff like that, and the “someone died or was in an accident” calls, that are the reason I don’t put my phone on night/do not disturb setting.

Dead hookers aren’t very useful.

That said, 9:00 is about right for phone calls. After that there had better be a pretty good reason. If you are a client t that has managed to get my cell that deadline is 5:00 absent a true emergency. . Texts are whatever, just don’t expect me to respond until morning if you send me something after 9:00-10:00. As others noted, it’s situational though. I have several friends in a group text and a different group with sisters, BIL’s etc. and on weekends, especially during lockdown, it can be a bit like a virtual get together that sometimes runs late and since that is the point it is obviously fine.

You are a good friend.

Call before 9pm here, unless its an emergency. Text anytime.

My wife disagrees with the texting. As she works odd shifts and is a light sleeper. Her family will text into the night or start at 5am. If she is working late or early, its really annoying to try and sleep and hear the phone vibrate or ring.
