I know Lake Placid sells out quickly. If you go there to register or try on-line as soon as registration starts, can you get a spot? Has anyone been in Lake Placid to register and has had the race close? I want to do the race in 2005 as my first IM and don’t want to miss out. I’d be willing to drive there to watch some of the race and register the day after or is the on-line registration good enough?
It’s not hard to get in, you just have to be right there on-line or at the event to get a spot. If you wait even 12 hours after the event is over you are taking a risk of not getting in. Other than that, it is pretty straight forward.
For the 2003 race I believe I waited for two weeks (after 2002 event) before registering on line and made it. For 2004 I registered on line immediately after the awards banquet (Monday), and I believe the event was full by mid day Tuesday.
I will be registering on –site this summer just to be sure.
That’s pretty funny. I’m actually signed up for Eagleman but I have as much chance at winning in Kona as I do qualifying for Lake Placid.
I think I’m going to drive up to LP and watch the race and register on site. I just didn’t want to drive up there with the chance that the race closes with people still standing in line to register. Thanks for the input.
On line is good enough, but like they said, do it early. It might not be a bad idea to go to the race to get a glimpse of what you are getting into, if the drive isn’t that bad. (or to just cheer for us on the course! - shameless I know!)
One lesson I learned last year. If you are there the morning after, bring cash or check, they don’t accept plastic. So there I was, the morning after IMLP this past July, trying to sign-up for this year with no cash or checkbook. I ended up going to the nearest pay phone and calling a buddy at work to register me online. It worked, but having cash or check will save you a small headache.
Registering for IM LP wasn’t bad, as long as you do it early. Ideally the same day that it opens. Also take into account to finding a hotel. This was discussed a few months back on this Forum. Many of the hotels in the area LOCK you in for minimum night stays from anywhere from 4-5 nights.
I have done IM-LP 2x and really enjoyed the race. However, I personally will be stepping away from official IM “TM” events because of the upward trend in entry fees and the increasing numbers of participants. They really need to cap the event to 1500 participants. Plus the IM Merchandising tent was awful, T-shirts were of poor quality, and the medal (??), Lake Placid seemed better when Isuzu was the title sponsor. But don’t let me get on that soap box.
