OK- semi-rhetorical question.
Ive eaten 4 boxes in the past 2 weeks. the things are great for a post workout breakfast. I eat a bowl full- cause normally I eat 2 bowls of any other cereal- I’m pretty sure its about 4 servings, since I kick a box in 3 days (and theres 12 in a box)
1 gram of fat, 48g of carbs, bunch of sodium and potassium, and 6g protein. 200cal/serving
throw in 8-12oz of skim milk.
I usually nuke em for a minute, softens them up, otherwise i’d be chewing for an hour
can it get any better?
are there downsides to these things?
Jerry Seinfeld had a funny bit on Grape Nuts, went something like:
“What’s the deal with Grape Nuts, you open the box, no grapes, no nuts, what’s the story there?”
In my opinion, they’re definately not the worst thing you can eat but there are better sources of complex carbs. I like sweet potatoes, oatmeal, quinoa and amaranth. Maybe not as easy to prepare, but a lot lower on the glycemic index, don’t cause such a rapid rise in insulin and overall healthier.
are there downsides to these things?
Are you concerned about your insulin level or amount of Carb grams you eat?
Grape nuts have the highest glycemic load, just short of raisins.
What’s glycemic load, you ask? It’s the actual amount of an insulin-stimulating carbohydrate consumed multiplied by the glycemic index for that carbohydrate.
It’s a more sophisticated measure of insulin response to food. They have 108g of carbs/cup. Compare that to an apple=18, banana=32, orange=63, brocolli=50.
not really concerned with anything. My body is like a furnace. even when not training I burn like 4000cal/day, and dont gain an ounce. I have no insulin issues, i dont eat junk food, candy, anything that would be considered dessert. I eat what i want, when i want, and usually its alot, and often. These things just seem to fill me up. At some point i need to teach myself to stop burning calories so fast, train my body to ration it… really kicks my ass the longer the duration of the activity, but for now whatever…
grape nuts just seem like a reasonably healthy breakfast- but im no nutritionist- my sisters an RD and has never made negative a comment about what/how i eat- so im gonna go with it.
Stay away from that stuff. I have tried it and seem to fart for the entire day. If you do decide to continue packing that shit away, stay clear of coworkers.
Now your showing your age, I doubt many on this site can remember the commercial or the person - he really didn’t live that long! Anyway, I jazz my Grapenuts up with raisins (iron) and a scoop of whey protein powder when I am heavy into the run training. They don’t taste that great but they beat most cereals from a fuel standpoint.
