I’m also not taling about swimming freestyle, without taking a breath.
But how many laps (yards/meters) can you swim underwater?
Just curious.

When I was in College I could go about 60 yards. If I was lucky, I could do 30 now.
I have known people go 100+ M underwater on their back.
About 75 meters underwater breaststroke (in a LCM pool). 5 minutes 2 seconds is my record lying still face down in a pool (with a doctor on hand!).
This is considered a very dangerous thing to practice. I believe it’s been proven that there’s no trianing benefit or clear correlation to aerobic capacity. There were some high profile deaths a few years ago, one was a top junior swimmer.
I do notice than when I’m more fit, it’s easier to hold my breath, but it’s no worth the risk to push my limits.
Please be careful.

Depends on how stupid you are.
1972, high school SCUBA Club. A class mate swam 70 yards and was at the bottom looking at his watch when a buddy and I noticed he was down a while and not moving. We brought him up, did rescue breathing- he lived.
Just a stupid idea.
Yes, he holds the record for the high school…
Shallow Water Blackout.
2 laps, 50y total

What would be the purpose of doing this?
Never bothered doing more than a 50 long course.
I did a few races kicking 30m underwater off the blocks before it was illegal…

What would be the purpose of doing this?I’ve noticed occasional “hypoxic” sets have fixed my bad habit of coming up for air immediately after a flip turn. It’s also helped me in excessively wavy ocean swims when I can’t always breathe when I want/need to. Probably a better avenue though is to do descending breathing patterns…every 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th strokes and so on.
Our YMCA pool has a sign prohibiting “extended underwater breath holding.” A lap swimmer noticed a guy on the bottom of the pool who had been doing just that, and saved the day. The lifeguard hadn’t noticed.
Mandatory rest breaks for lifeguards now, so they can pay better attention. Pain in the ass for lap swimmers. And, they really mean those signs.
Back in the day 75yds. Now…would be happy with a 50.
Back in college I could swim under water just after 3rd lap, so about 80 yards. And I smoked then.
Now, maybe 40 yards.
I’ve seen Mitch do about 80 yards 2 years ago and another guy go 100.
Shallow Water Blackout.
A lot of my buddies are watermen. (I’m a surfer). Shallow water blackout is no joke! I have almost lost a couple of friends due to this… luckly both have lived. A handful of my buddies can freedive down in the 65ft-100ft range. It can be really serious stuff, you have to have a good spoter. Some of my friends can hold their breath in the 4-4:30 range… it really stresses me out.
Great video if you have time!! Human potiental is amazing.

50 yards
.
25 meters. My underwater dolphin is weak. Maybe I could go further if I would push it but I see underwater dolphin as a way to practice kick strenght and streamline rather than a way to make my lungs hurt.
In college, 50 yards dolphin kicking on my back. Today, I won’t try for more than 25 yards.
From a wall push, 25 yards if I try really hard.
A lot of the real swimmers in my masters group can easily do 25s, and could probably go 50 on the same effort it takes me to do 25.

Lot’s of dumb people out there. I strongly advise against this as I know someone who died trying to see how far they could go. Just doing it mid workout, problem was he was doing it in an un-lifeguarded pool. Very dumb I know, but he was an experienced swimmer. No sense in doing something that really has no point to doing in the first place.
