All these amazing athletes doing ridiculous things on the track and on the field. I ran in college so this gets me a little more pumped up than triathlon. I know this isn’t a running forum but I thought there would be a little more action discussing the World Championships. I can’t wait for the 200m…absoulutely loved watching the 400m hurdles for I ran that in college. The times are crazy fast.

They are showing the World Championships? All I saw are a bunch of US competitors and the odd foreigner who happened to beat an American.
For crying out loud, they could have at least shown some hot female pole vaulters.
Go to universalsports.com they’ve got all the hottie pole vaulters my man…plus all of the other amazing athletes. The decathletes and the the throwers are a blast to watch.
they covered quite a bit of pole vaulting qualifiers- inbetween events like the womens 10k- they showed probably 10 jumps. i’d assume they’ll show more when they get to the finals later this week
and what about the 100m? sure gay and patton were in there- but all day yesterday was the Bolt show.
we didnt even have a women in the hep field, but they took a good few minutes to sum up the previous days events, and showed the entirety of the final 800- I think they’re doing pretty well considering its a week long event, and they only get 2-4 hrs of coverage daily
major championships are kind of tough events to cover on TV, since you typically only have a couple finals per day early on, and lots and lots of qualifying events going on simultaneously. It’s one of the good things about attending a meet live, in that there’s almost always something going on, so you can watch some throws and/or jumps while they’re staging between races on the track, but it’s harder to capture that on TV which is better geared to only showing one thing at a time.
I’m sorry I missed seeing the 100 final yesterday, but really looking forward to seeing what Bolt can do in the 200.
Well we “only” get 2 channels showing 4 hours of events, which isn’t bad. BBC tends to be more British oriented and Eurosport is more general in nature. Just watching our tiny Jessica Ennis get her gold medal for Heptathlon. Awesome stuff!

As far as I could tell while watching the same broadcast as you, there were only three female pole vaulters in the qualifying round: all from the US. I didn’t watch the whole thing, so maybe I missed some.
The 100m is the marquee event in athletics, so they show that. Add to that the fact that the show is tape delayed (correct?), so they knew what was going to happen in the 100 well before the broadcast, and it’s no wonder they touted it non-stop.
If there are US athletes who are competitive in their events, that will be shown. They won’t show others (beyond the 100 and perhaps some other events) at the expense of US athletes. It will be interesting to track what finals they show.
I have to say the 100m final was aweosme with Bolts 9.58 for 100m thats faster than alot of people rind their bike

Just saw this thread, and headed to Universal’s Web site, in time for the last three laps of the men’s 10,000. Kenenisa Bekele tracked Zersenay Tadesse for the entire race, and then dropped a 57.4 on the last lap to bury Tadesse. The top three (with Masai from Kenya) all were under 27:00. The English announcers compared him to Bolt, inasmuch as no one else in the field is close; Bekele just lies in wait and drops a sub-60 last lap to win. Bekele’s unbeaten all-time at the 10,000. Dathan Ritzenhein was sixth or seventh. Below are Bekele’s 5K splits.

Universal is using the BBC feed for their online coverage and it totally rocks compared to the usual US coverage. It’s funny to venture over to Let’s Run, and hear a number of posters admit that they had no idea that shot put could be an interesting event to follow until the British coverage actually showed more than four attempts total of the event.
CBC pathetically failed to show the 100m live, in favour of a useless tennis match. NBC as usual goes by the one-country approach and if an athlete from another country happens to be in the way, he/she might get covered as well (I guess the Jamaican gals in the 100m today got in the way). Last two Olympics I’ve watched RDS, the French-language sports station up here, which provides good general coverage of the events and manages to cover athletes from a number of countries (what a concept). When in Europe on business during track season, I like to catch Eurosport live coverge of track meets if I can - they do it like everyone should, with roaming coverage of the events as they unfold.
Bolt and Bekele are monster talents - great to see them in action again. Gay cuts out of the 200m - OK, I guess he figures there’s no hope for him against Bolt but the US team has a chance in the relay. Score one for realism.
And of course, the women’s pole vault - could I see that slo-mo replay again?..
bekele looked like he “jogged” the first 23 laps and then decided to sprint the bell lap. absolutely incredible. when you saw the other runners finish most bent over and put their hands on their knees, clearly spent from the effort. bekele looked fresh as if he could do it again.
Well I’m damn excited for sure. And props to the Americans, Jenny B, Ritz and Rupp for their AR’s and PR’s yesterday. And all being top 8!
In case you can’t watch live on Universal during the day LIVE, Versus is showin it at least 3X a day, and 2X in primetime, live TV at around 9AM EST.
The US broadcasters on Versus on the distance stuff are just AWFUL. Yesterday they are lamenting that Jenny B was sooo far back and and sooo far out of it. Did they not understand that the field went out crazy fast and died, and she ran the smart race and picked off chicks left and right the last 800 and ended up 5th? HUGE PR and new American record by 10 seconds. They just don’t even get it.
So I’m watching the Universal live, because at least the Brits are not total twits…
For the 968th time, the US mens 4 X 100 team manages to screw up; and the women as well, for added effect. It used to be a problem of egos (“I’m to good to need to practice”); now, I think it’s just in their heads and they muff it (albeit barely, this time, as it took a UK protest to DQ them). This has been happening on and off since 1995.
The Jamaican team was only mildly impressive and yet still ran the second-fastest all-time in the final. Bolt looked a little tired and didn’t run a third leg up to his standards, but he still almost crashed into Powell. We are so spoiled now that we expect world records every time he steps on the track.
As a track junkie, and with time off right now, I’ve found the best coverage live streaming on the internet, with the UK commentators - Steve Ovett gets a little excited sometimes but I like him.
