How does this not get it's own WTF is wrong w/people thread?

I seen some really stupid things, but this?

I hate this.

I also hate when I see parents pushing their kids across the middle of the road because they are too damn lazy to use the crosswalk.

People should be happy that Im not dictator. I would have all these idiots neutered on site.

Reminds me of the scene I saw on the road last week in DE. A group of bikers rode by, with a man and woman on the last bike. Both had faceless helmets on, and the driver’s helmet had a mohawk of ~2" spikes from front to rear. His rear passenger’s face was about three inches from the row of spikes. One sneeze or head movement by either and the nearest ED staff would have an awesome story to tell their kids.

My roomie hates it when people put dogs in the back of pick ups. This sent her over the top.

But, but, she was back there, holding on tight, the kid was safe!!! /pink

People are really ignorant to the effects that momentum has on objects at rest. That kid in the stroller takes on the weight equivalent of an elephant if the truck hits something and stops dead; there’s no way she could hold on.

there’s no way she could hold on.

Well except for the fact that if they hit something they would both be moving with moment in the same direction.

She could probably hold onto the stroller just fine…until they both struck whatever object that was in their way, likely the cab of the truck.

I’m unaware of seat belts for dogs. A dog in a car is in probably in as much danger, possible more depending on the type of accident, than one in the bed of a truck.

Unless the dog is strapped in while in a vehicle it doesn’t matter if it’s inside or outside it will become a living projectile.

The best choice is to just leave your dog at home.

Has no one ever ridden in the bed of a pickup?

We used to go to summer swim meets in back of trucks and jeeps with the rear seats removed. We even went fast!

Oh the horror!

if we could stop getting outraged when dumb people do dumb stuff

we wouldn’t have so many dumb people
.

Agreed! I remember times even riding on the top of the truck cab because the back of the truck was full.
Of course, those were the back roads for Alabama(insert banjo music here), not Daytona Beach.

But even then, I couldn’t think of anyone doing that with their infant. Makes me cringe. Not sure why i think its ok once they are older.

Would you do so now?

There are harnesses for dogs. There are also car crates. Even w/o those, it is safer inside than out. My dog lays down in the back of my Jeep, behind the rear seats, she might get tossed a bit, but wouldn’t hit the windshield.

My parents held us on their laps as infants in the car. When I was older, I got to hold my baby brother. We put the seats down in the back of the station wagon and used couch cushions for long trips … crawled around back there with the dog at 70 plus mph.

This is only stupid because we have become so overly protective. Everything must be totally safe and virtually risk free or you are stupid. It is beyond anything I ever thought I would see.

This woman should not be in jail. It is ridiculous.

Would you do so now?

I would if I would not get arrested. It was a blast. We even rode to the Fourth of July picnic in the back of a truck with all the picnic stuff. We ate watermelon on the way and spit the seeds out the back of the truck.

I guess my folks should have been arrested and thrown in jail …

Brick, I am with you on this one.

The rage that people work up when they see others taking on risk is a mystery to me.

We all die, there are plenty of damn infants around.

We can all turn off our tribal protective instincts now, they will not be necessary for some time.

Would you do so now?

I agree that it’s not the state’s job to protect you from yourself, but I think there’s plenty of stuff we did as teen-agers that we (okay, most of us) realize was stupid, and would choose not to do as adults.

Your sarcasm doesn’t work well here.

There is nothing criminal about riding in the back of a pickup truck. It doesn’t matter if you are 8 months, 8 years or 80 years. It is no different than when my mother held us in her lap in the car.

Who remembers their grandfather letting you sit on his lap and steer the car when you got in the neighborhood?

I guess gramps should have gone to jail too?

They were in the back of a pickup truck for crying out loud. No big deal.

Who do you think was driving? Parents. The swim meet trips were organized by the parents. We piled into any open vehicle we could gather. We decorated them with crepe paper and streamers. And then we drove to the meets as a team. Coaches and parents drove with the kids piled in the back.

Riding in the back of a pick up truck is not a stupid teen age human trick. At least it wasn’t until the nanny state decided that kids could not ride bicycles or skateboards or scooters without helmets. Or that jungle gyms were too dangerous for public parks. Or that 18 year olds can’t handle the responsibility of drinking a beer but are perfectly suited for going to war.

I wasn’t being sarcastic.

I really am with you. I really am amazed how people get so upset when people do stuff that slightly raises the risk of dying earlier.

My sarcasm detector is still pegging …

I think your too many damn infants bit is telling.

Nice try though.
