Tell me about it. And good luck in qualifying. The idea of a reasonably close (from NJ) nats in what might be a non-flat/non-drafting race that qualifies for Worlds in London in 2012 is compelling (although I’ll be 54, not 55 in 2012).
I beg to differ. Okay, maybe the qualification standards are fairly easy to find, but where the hell are you guys getting the info regarding Nats and Worlds for 2012?? I’ve looked everywhere on that P.O.S. website that I can think of and the best I can find is that 2011 Worlds is in Hungary. And here’s how to qualify - oh sorry, too late. But here’s how to qualify for 2009 Nats, if that helps!! WTF???
edit - Ah. Didn’t think to check the FRONT page. I still say their website sucks, though.

Yes, their web site sucks. Big time. No argument.
As for the 2012 info, I received email from USAT indicating the selection of Burlington, VT as the site of the 2011 and 2012 Nats; it also indicated that the 2011 Nats would be the qualifier for the ITU Worlds in London (whose location I didn’t know previously).
Quick Question so if you Qualify in 2010 that is for 2011, Nationals in Burlington?
Generally, qualification is a one-year window. So any USAT race after '09 Nationals until the week before 2010 Nationals will qualify you for 2010 Nationals. And 2010 Nats is the qualifier for 2011 Worlds. There are occasional exceptions (special qualifiers, overlapping qualifiers, etc), but that’s the basic process.
Bottom Line: Top 10% of your age group at any sanctioned triathlon. It doesn’t even have to be the Olympic distance.
Or… top 33% of your age group at any of the “special qualifying races”.
If the succeeding years follow this year’s (2009 / 2010) method; you will race in 2010 at Nationals to qualify for 2011 worlds.
The information is there, it just isn’t all that user friendly. If you still can’t find the answers you’re looking for, e-mail Amanda Duke at USAT; she was extremely helpful last year when I was getting my 17 year old son signed up for Nationals when the “youngest” age group was 18-19.
They want participation, they were going to allow my daughter to go to nationals also even though she had only raced the sprint distance races (she podium’d at those races). she ended up not being able to go because of school.
If you are competitive at all, you can go. Vt may be farther than we would want to go but my son wants to start racing the ITU / junior elite races now. Although there was a bunch of negative press about this past year’s AG nationals (swimming on a treadmill), they put on a very nice event.
Quick and related question: i raced in the NW Qualifier this last summer (Portland Freshwater Tri) and finished in the top 3rd, but haven’t heard anything about nationals. If I want to go do I just sign up? Not even a congratulatory e-mail?

No USAT is going green by not sending congratulatory e-mails out. Just sign up.
