How do you pack your floor pump?

Can you carry it on or does it fail some TSA regulation? I was thinking about putting it in the bike bag but I’m guessing I’d have to duct tape in a safe spot so it doesn’t bash into the bike itself?

Thanks for the advice…

put it with the bike if you really feel you need to bring it where ever you’re going.

I’ve never taken mine to out of town races and have always had luck finding folks willing to share both around the hotels for pre-race testing or on race day in transition.

I agree finding a pump usually isn’t a problem at the race site a day or two before the event. Problem is I’m arriving a full week before the event, won’t even be staying near the event and won’t be staying with anyone who’s a cyclist/triathlete…

Why not carry smaller “travel pump”? http://www.topeak.com/products/Pumps/RoadMorphG
Looks small (it is!!), but can get 100psi easily, it includes very good pressure gauge as well. Highly recommended!

If you are already paying through the teeth to ship the bike, the added weight of the pump can’t hurt the cost. I would look at maybe getting some thin foam to wrap around it to protect your bike frame though.

The other option is to buy a pump when you arrive at where you are going. Something cheap can probably be had and then leave it when you go. Sometimes you pay a little for convenience.

I have a large bike case with an internal metal frame. I just wrap my pump up in bubble wrap (to protect the bike, not the lumpy!) and then tape that to the bikes frame, or the metal frame inside the bike case.

I’m way too OCD to ever depend on anyone else for a pump on race morning. The hard part however is getting your pump out of transition after you’ve pumped your tires. EVERYONE will want to borrow it. Which is fine when theres loads of time but when you are trying to get rid of the pump and get a warmup swim in you have to sneak the pump out of there or you feel like a total jerk saying no to anyone that asks to use it.

Roubaix makes a nice travel floor pump that packs flat. A little pricey at $100 but works as well as a regular floor pump and will probably last forever. At least that’s what I’m hoping.

I don’t, I pack a Topeak Road Morph instead… small, has a pressure gauge, gets to 110psi easily, the head fits into the valve hole in the disk so no crack pipe needed…
In fact I take this to local races as well, rather than the floor pump.

I have the Morph pump that I travel with when I fly. It has a footpeg and gauge, and fits in my wheelbag pocket.
.

+1. It also fits in your dry clothes bag for IM races.

I just put it in my duffle bag with my clothes and stuff.

I have an aerus bike bag. I put it outside the foam on the end where the back of the bike is. The bottom down, with part of it under the foam. Never had a problem. The body of the pump bumps up against the metal screw rod I have between the rear dropouts.

I fly quite a bit with my bikes and usually will take my Silca pump along. I too have the aerus bag and put it outside the foam on the end standing upright and have never had a problem with it.

Put it in the bike box. Depending on the weight restrictions of regular bags and the bike box of the airline, you might have to pack differently every time you fly. Just make sure you look at the airlines website before you leave. These limits change with the wind. But, generally try to put the pump in with the bike. You can buy some foam pipe protectors from the hardware store and put it aroung the tube of the pump, and also your bikes frame. This will also allow you to put more stuff in with the bike, which allows more stuff to be secure and not bounce around in there.

Hope this helps,

Chris

I have traveled with my floor pump in my carry-on many times, but on my most recent return-trip, TSA took it away from me. Not only do the rules change with the wind, it all depends upon the attitude and/or interpretation of each individual agent.

I have an Aerus bag so that’s a great idea.

Thanks for all the suggestions

Like they took it away going through security?

That really, really sucks. I have carried my Joe blow pro through security on several occasions without a problem.

TSA is definitely hit or miss. I flew on a few trips with my pedal wrench carried on but then at PDX after the Rev3 TSA made me check it because it was over 7 inches. It’s random…

I use to fly a lot with a floor pump until I discovered the Topeak. Works like a charm and my recommendation! Another company makes a mini aluminum travel pump. Can’t think of the name. It’s marketed as a travel pump.
