Out of pure curiosity I thought it would be interesting to see what HR one is pushing during swim training.
Anyone using the new swim HR strap from Garmin who would like to share their experience?

I have the HRM-TRI.
I love the additional data. When I combine it with some of the other data it has been instructive as to why some of my longer sets feel the way they do.
It’s been flawless for me so far. Also used it on bike and run with no issues.
I picked up the bundle… The HRM-Tri is nice. super comfy. The HRM-Swim on the other hand is NOT comfy. You need to snug it up a lot and the edges of the strap tend to bite into the skin. They should have done a better job making the edges smoother. Unless I push off the wall hard or at a weird angle the strap does stay in place. I haven’t had any major problems downloading data either. I do take my take turning on my watch and making sure it’s synced before starting… afterward I stand around with my wrist near the strap until it downloads. If you try to get changed or shower it’ll sometimes fail for some reason… simply retrying to download gets the data though. Haven’t lost anything.
overall I’m happy… but for the price I wish it was more comfortable.
Cool. Thanks for your replies. I’ll get one as well

Basically this ^ exactly. I have tried both straps. The swim strap has two issues 1) the irritation factor from the edges of the edges of the strap mentioned above 2) most of the strap is not elastic (at least configured to fit me) so having it adjusted snug enough that it felt like it would slip down meant that it felt like it constricted breathing. It DID stay in place quiet well during swimming. The Tri strap was much more comfortable. When pushing off of the wall, I got a sensation that it was going to slip down. I think that this was just the elastic part stretching when the front of the strap caught the water. Every time, it it went right back into place though. I suspect that with a tri top or swim skin on, that this would not be an issue at all. Both transferred their stored data nicely to the watch as designed.
I use the automatic transfer from GC to TP, but somehow the HR data from swims are lost.
can we expect a price drop anytime soon?
Interesting… in my case the pain in my lungs/legs/arms while working out usually far exceeds any discomfort from the HRM-Swim. I do not have this problem… very happy with it.

Garmin just came out with a fix:
Forerunner 920XT software version 6.10
Added support for updating past activities with heart rate data stored in an HRM-Tri strap. This feature can be accessed through the history menu on the watch. So if you find that the 920XT doesn’t have HR data when you expected it to, now there’s a way to re-sync the workout with the strap. The 920XT will then re-upload the workout with the completed data.
The swim HR is a game changer; being able to monitor HR during interval session is immensely helpful.
However, obsessing over HR may not be necessary:
“Training both slower and faster than threshold pace does not require that an athlete know their exact threshold pace only a rough approximation of it. That approximation can easily be made with heart rates, less than 150 bpm or greater than 160 bpm, or perceived exertion, 10 to 14 for swimming slower than threshold pace and 16-18 for swimming faster than threshold pace. I don’t believe anything is lost by training with these approximations of threshold pace versus training with more exact parameters.”
I have the Garmin Swim HRM and have done 4 swims with it so far.
It does what it is supposed to.
First swim I had it too tight and it was not so comfortable. I’ve been testing how loose it can be since then and have found that it can be quite loose and still remain in place during a turn.
Had my first technical glitch yesterday - it couldn’t download the HR data from the swim session when I attempted to save the session.
I tried many solutions but what worked was:
restart the session, disconnect and reconnect the HRM (in the settings menu) and then stop and save the set.
The bottom line question I usually ask myself when I’m evaluating a new purchase is: If I was offered a full refund, would I return it? In this case, no, I would not take a refund.
