How do you carry food on the bike?

I’ve a 1/2 IM coming up and my new super-cool tri suit has no pockets. How does one carry bars/gels on the bike (or run for that matter)? … Gracias!

Man, you need some clothes with pockets! that is key!

bento box
.

I have seen a number of riders wearing “fuel belts” that not only offer a place to pin the race number, but also has accomodations for gel flasks. Individual gel serving packets are often times placed under the fabric of the shorts on the thigh (above knee grippers) for easy access! Others get these “bento box” things that look like bike bags with no top that are held onto the frames top tube by velcro just behind the stem/headset! I have also seen people rubber band bars/gels to there behind the seat bottle holders but one other option is to go get another super cool, one-piece tri-suit but make sure it has pocket(s)!

Ditto the Bento Box and jerseys with pockets.

In one of Slowman’s training/tech articles on Slowtwitch, he mentions that he tapes his gels to the top tube in a stack/staggered pattern. He then rips thegel package open leaving the tear away tab under the tape. Sounds like a pretty good system as your nutrition is in front of you as a reminder. Of course, it helps to have a larger bike as well.

I use a bento box . It’s a small bag that hooks in the space between the stem and top tube.

I got a bento box a few weeks ago and it’s great. It even holds a cell phone for long training rides (in case of tire disaster or kid emergencies!)

Prior to getting that, I taped gels to the top tube with electrical tape. That worked well, too.

At a race, I once saw a bike with what looked like a Clif bar stuck directly to and melted over the top tube. Effective, I guess, but really gross.
