How do you canadiens feel about Gretzky?

He’s a god in the country. Greatest player who ever lived. But he’s MAGA. Thoughts?

I saw an article about it in the Atlantic today but it was behind a paywall so I couldn’t read it.

Canadian hockey legend. Cannot deny his impact on the sport or his place in it.

Has lived in the US for… 35-40 years now? I don’t know how he formed his relationship with Trump but he is not an outwardly political person. I’m not going to judge him that harshly over his association to one person.

That’s my take as well. He’s very protective of Canadian hockey, and from what I’ve seen a proud Canadian. As far as I know, he’s never taken a MAGA stance on any issue. He just seems to be a friend of Trumps.

This is an interesting dynamic. Because if you go back 20 years and were rich and famous, Trump was a party train. So imagine hanging with him, and then watching him become President of the US. And when none of the policies touch you as elite class, it is likely hard for some to unwind that relationship. Everyone has a different line.

I have no clue you about God, country (Canada) and Wayne but I do know that Wayne’s daughter married a multiple Majors champion who has since defected from the PGA tour and joined the Saudi Arabia sovereign wealth funded LIV Tour and that is how he is now occupying real estate in America’s King’s head. I do know that God status as reflected in goals scored in the NHL is fixing to shift to a Russian.

You didnt even read the article??

seems lib people are like this…

vote any republican = MAGA
are chistrian = MAGA
ever visted a trump property = MAGA
and so on… lovely toxic labeling yet dare you mispronoun someone its the death penalty

Gretzky is my age and I grew up about 20 miles from his home and have followed him since I was about 15. He was really the only sporting idol for me.

I don’t really get the hate towards him. He has always been very pro Canada in hockey and heavily involved in international hockey as a player and GM and his pro-Trump views have nothing to do with hockey.

It’s a perfect example of how the majority want everyone to agree with them or the ones with different views is an outcast. I don’t like Trump and his tariffs on Canada are ridiculous but that doesn’t mean I hate everyone who supports Trump. Canadians are doing the same with Bobby Orr and it’s nonsense.

Hockey legend.

I don’t care at all about his politics unless he’s trying to shove them down people’s throats, or being an a-hole about it. Same goes for most anyone.

Ovi is a machine. Glad he’s playing for the hometown squad even though I’m a Broad Street Bullies guy at heart.

I’ve seen it written that Ovi is scoring in an era where goals come harder due to quality of play and goalie pad sizes but I haven’t scratched the surface on that question.

Both legends.

Is Gretzky of Ukranian heritage as well?

Well, he attended Trump’s election victory party and inauguration and has been photographed wearing MAGA hats. He seems to count Donald Trump as a personal friend, which aside from politics, would cause me to seriously question his (Gretzky’s) moral center. Politically, I don’t know that he’s publicly taken specific stances, but I suspect that’s part of the problem within Canada, as Trump routinely craps on them and he hasn’t spoken up in defense of his country against Trump.

Kind of. Walter Gretzky (father) said that his parents were “white Russians from Belarus”. It seems the earlier family were from Grodno, which is in present day Belarus.

A more recent problem Canadians had is that when he came on the ice as honorary captain for Canada in the Four Nations Cup. He came on the ice by the American bench, gave thumbs up to the American players and was wearing a regular suit.

At the same time, the U.S honorary captain, Mike Eruzione, came out wearing an American sweater and focussed his attention on the American team.

It struck a lot of us like he was cheering for the Americans. The real problem is that while Trump was initiating his tariff war on Canada, Gretzky has never spoken up against him and seems to be embracing it.

Mario Lemieux and Sid Crosby have become the hockey heroes now.

I would imagine Wayne has a lot of friends, many of whom aren’t maga.

What platform do you use that you always quote phonetically??

This.

His silence says alot in my mind.

If he showed up at a game I was at, I would boo him. He is also a formal Oiler. They eviscerated my teenage dreams for my hometown hockey team.

The fact that a Russian is going to break his goal record is confusing for me! These are difficult times.

Probably deserves its own thread. Yes, Ovi is playing in a lower-scoring era than Gretzky. OTOH, Ovi’s goals are in a higher-scoring section of the game. He leads Gretzky 321-204 in power play goals and trails 73-5 in short-handed goals.

I imagine that he hangs out with shitbird because he agrees with a lot of what shitbird says.

And he trails Gretzky by about 1200 assists.
