How do they seed the waves at Alcatraz?

Is your wave assigned by swim time, overall finish time (i think that question was on the registration?), age group?

How do they set it up? What general order? About how many waves? Any other advice to consider if you are in an earlier or later wave?

I would assume this will be based on estimated finish time which we included in the registration form. Of course, I have not actually raced it yet, so maybe someone has a better idea…

If I recall correctly, it is not unlike the Egyptian ferry disaster. Basically, they blow the horn and it is every man (and woman) for themselves. The horn goes, you jump.

The seeding is by age. each age group has a different colour cap. They load under 35 (or 40?) on the main deck and the over 40 on the upper deck. They try to get all of one group off before the next but there is a lot of mixing of age groups. When we were told to head downstairs most of the main deck was already gone. It was 8 minutes after the start gun before I got off the boat.

The only true wave is the pros who start a couple minutes before everyone else

The seeding really doesn’t matter, everyone just starts jumping off the boat regardless of what wave they are in.

Allrighty, I can deal with that. I’ll take a mass swim start over having to wait for my wave any day.
