How do I find a running 'coach'?

I give up! I over stride no matter what I do, among other nasty habits I have when I run. I just need an individual to look at how I run. What do I “google” to find someone to help me figure out this illusive, should be easy, sport? I googled ‘running coach’ in my town, but all it comes up with are local articles for high school track coaches. I want to find specifically a coach that knows about triathlon, someone that knows about running, that won’t tell me I need orthotics, or to see a chiropractor, or some other bullshit, if you know what I’m sayin’. I just need someone to tell me, ‘kevin, you’ve gotta do some of these drills to stop your over striding habit’, ‘you need to not do ABCDEF to not land so hard’, etc… I’d like to not have to drive 300 miles to do this either (I live in the Peoria, IL area).

I’m usually good with Googling stuff, but I guess I don’t know enough to start researching. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

I know someone who could like at you via a video but not in person
.

I’ll help for free (at least your self professed overstriding issue). If you have a smartphone, download a metronome app. Set at 88-90. Run and hit your right (or left) foot every beat. If you don’t have a smartphone, you can find a cheap Seiko metronome for $15 on ebay. Hard to “overstride” for long with a cadence up near 180. Simple drill.

The higher cadence will shorten your stride… you will know it is better if you can’t see your footfall out of our peripheral vision.

I don’t think you got the intent of the OP: he wants to throw some money at the problem!

I am available to fly to wherever the OP lives and work with him in person. First class only. Please PM me.

How many miles a week are you running? I’m guessing the answer is about half of what you should be. No need to get a coach. The cadence suggestions might help, but if you run more you will become more efficient. Run more, run more often, then run some more. Put the watch away. Run. There’s no magic to getting better at running.

Yeah, I’m nowhere near where I want to be on weekly mileage. I just finished a 22 mile week. I’d like to be in the 40’s, but can’t seem to ditch this el problemo with my stupid shin, which is why I probably shouldn’t run more right now :frowning: Yeah, I didn’t mention that either… the shin thing… sorry about that.

Look up Fitness Concepts in Washington DC, Ken is one of the best in the business.

He WILL forever change the way you run. And trust me, for the better.

search this forum for barryp…save your $$$, run more for a lot of months, watch your times get faster.

or go by vibrams, newtons, specia drag parachutes, fancy shorts, compression socks, and hire a coach for lots more $$$

OR

…find a local running group, and read the barryp stuff. cheaper and more effective.

I have been going with a few local guys lately, It helps me push harder through tough workouts, I PRed for 5k doing this.

It’s always tougher with injuries. You might try going to 2 runs a day and getting as many miles as your shins will allow. I don’t know if it would be different for your shins if you did 2 three mile runs a day rather than 1 six mile run, but running twice a day seems to be a key for a lot of folks who want to break out of whatever plateau they’ve reached.
