I’m hoping to sign up for IMFL 2010. It will be my first IM and after seeing how difficult it was for a few of my friends to sign up for IMLP 2010 I’m hoping to get in.
Is there a best way(other than being a returning competitor) to sign up? Is it advantageous to go to Florida to sign up or simply do it online at the computer the minute it opens up.

Well, I managed to sign up for IMAZ the day it opened online registration. Took me three hours sitting in front of my computer hitting refresh as (surprise!) active.com was not prepared for the large server hit. They never are. However, I got in. If you don’t get in, you can always go for one of the community fund slots.
Or, you can send your money to one of the independent iron distance races (Vineman, for example) that has slots open even now, with less than 34 days to go until the race. Thats what I also did. So I am doining Vineman this weekend, and IMAZ this November. If I had to do it over, I would probably not spend any money on a branded IM again, for various reasons, the problems getting in just being one of the reasons.

Online might be a gamble (for CDA, there have been plenty of online slots, but other races close super fast). The best way to ensure getting a slot without racing is to go & volunteer at this year’s race - volunteers get first dibs on slots after the racers make their choice. Perhgaps it’s happened, but I haven’t heard any stories of volunteers not being able to get a slot if they want one…
