How did YOUR race go?

I am attempting to elicit responses about how ST amateurs’ races went this past weekend for anyone who raced and I am hoping to do it in a way that all of us find interesting. To that extent, could you try to answer the following questions:

  1. What race were you in and what were the important conditions that affected the race if any (weather, # of people, course, etc)?
  2. What was your goal going into the race, how did the race go?
  3. What did you do best in the race?
  4. What mistake did you make and how did you learn from it?
  5. Did any equipment you use work out really well or fail you?
  6. Upon reflecting on the race, how does it shape your training or strategy for your next race?
  7. Anything that you want to ask the ST community about regarding your race?

Even though I don’t have a race this past weekend, I’ll use my last race on June 3rd as an example. My hope is that by answering the questions above, it makes it less of a touting one’s horn and more of a chance to share with other triathletes so that we can support and learn from each other and perhaps get ideas that help us.

My race on June 3rd was the IM 70.3 in Hawaii. There was a bit of rain and heat on the course, the bike wasn’t too windy, much less than my test ride a few days earlier but the run was very windy on one particular long stretch.

My goal going into the race was twofold, to get under 5 hours and to qualify for the 70.3 Worlds. I finished in 5:05 and 15th in my age group meaning for a few hours I was upset at myself for having barely missed both my goals. Then in the roll down ceremony, I got very lucky and got a spot to Worlds. My place in each area was 456 in the swim, 68th on the bike and 44th on the run.

Hmm, what I did best is not usually my focus. I guess it was that generally on the bike I know I have to catch up from my terrible swimming, but I don’t want to kill myself for the run. After an initial flurry of passing folks, I told myself to be calm and patient and not try to pass more than 5 people to the turn around and 5 people from there the 20 miles to T2. I kept dialing myself back on the bike and stayed mentally on top of this.

Mistakes - there were many. A minor but annoying one is that I left my Garmin on my bike and forgot to bring it with me on the run. More major is that I compounded a bad swim by at one point going off course and having to angle back adding at least a minute to my swim. Secondly, I overused my calves leading up to the run such that during the run, I couldn’t increase the pace even when I felt I could without my calves firing as they were on the verge of cramping up the whole run especially the last five miles. I learned that I need to figure out what is stressing my calves in the swim or bike and handicapping me in the run.

Equipment - as I was refilling my Profile Design HC 35 at an aid station, the rubber and plastic lid got pulled off as I pulled the gatorade bottle out after filling it. Also, on the bike, with such a combination of wind and hills that were highly variable, I found myself switching into my small chainring occasionally and this annoyed me. I don’t know how to fix the lid problem except to be more careful and on the chainring, it has made me think about switching to a 1x setup on my next bike (reading Nick’s post at Tririg also helped me think about this).

Upon reflection, I realized I am in way over my head going to Worlds after squeaking into the race. So, I hired a coach and this is really helping me train smarter. I also have figured out (it should have been more obvious to me) that I am ruining my calves on the swim trying desperately to be faster as I have cramped in my calves while swimming in races and training often. So, I am working on pulling more and kicking less in my training so that I swim in races more like this too and then preserve my calves for the bike and most importantly the run.

I guess my question for ST is how the heck (besides video analysis and yards in the pool) do folks become such good swimmers when they didn’t grow up swimming as a sport??? It is my achilles heel.

Also, I am going to try posting these questions weekly on Mondays to make this a regular thing. If you have any suggestions on the questions asked in order to get responses that are more interesting for all of us to read, can you share those with me?

I’ll play.

  1. What race were you in and what were the important conditions that affected the race if any (weather, # of people, course, etc)?

Fat Clam in Rhode Island. Signed up last minute as I was picking my son up in Boston from a camp and the race was on the way home. Weather conditions were great. Old guys went in the 1’st wave (i.e. me). Non-mass starts are always a challenge for me as I don’t know who started 5 or 10 minutes later so you have to keep pushing even with a decent lead with a mile to go. I find chasing is much easier to keep a good pace. Course was a short swim, hilly bike and a relatively flat run - which all played well for me.

  1. What was your goal going into the race, how did the race go?

The goal is always the same before the gun goes off. To win. This weekend I did. (I usually don’t)

  1. What did you do best in the race?

I got the 1’st beer after finishing.

Surprisingly a balanced race. Not nearly as far off the lead in the swim, moved through the field on the bike and into the lead on the run. good transitions as well

  1. What mistake did you make and how did you learn from it?

Didn’t bring tinted goggles and the swim came back directly into the sun,

Had a bit of an issue getting my wet suit off my left leg.

  1. Did any equipment you use work out really well or fail you?

BMC TM01 always rides well.

Garmin was not giving the best “real time” pace. Average was accurate. I think it was all the trees.

  1. Upon reflecting on the race, how does it shape your training or strategy for your next race?

Next race is Olympic so I need to add a few longer runs/rides over the next few weeks. Definitely can’t push the same pace this weekend for a race twice the distance.

No race this past weekend. Racing next weekend. What I did this past weekend is to screw up my taper. Weekend before last was the last hard and long effort. Went easy all last week. Felt fantastic Saturday so instead of easy 40 mile bike (usually do 70 miles on weekends for HIM) did 40 miles at race pace on the race bike / race wheels, and it felt so easy. YAY! Then swam 50y intervals yesterday morning for 40 minutes which was again easy. Then went running later that day again short just 60 minutes, but in the heat and it went to shit and I imploded.

  1. What race were you in and what were the important conditions that affected the race if any (weather, # of people, course, etc)?

IMLP - weather was near perfect so that helped my race tremendously

  1. What was your goal going into the race, how did the race go?

Sub 14 hours - My first IM was IMMD in 13:30 – this was a much harder course but I am also in better shape. I finished in 13:13

  1. What did you do best in the race?

Ran a very solid marathon for my abilities - faster than IMMD on a much tougher course.

  1. What mistake did you make and how did you learn from it?

My bike pacing wasnt the best. Spiked a few times above FTP which I did not want to do. I was impatient on the second lap. In retrospect I shouldve just taken a couple additional minutes to finish course and avoided the spikes.

  1. Did any equipment you use work out really well or fail you?

I used gu flasks for nutrition to avoid having to deal with gu packets (opening them and trashing them while biking). I think they worked reasonably well except a bit hard to get the last bits out.

  1. Upon reflecting on the race, how does it shape your training or strategy for your next race?

I am a big BarryP believer and have made good progress with consistent running vs. inconsistent but big mileage runs. My longest run for this IM was 15 miles (vs 18 miler for my first IM) but ran much better (nearly 30 seconds per mile faster on a hilly course).

  1. Anything that you want to ask the ST community about regarding your race?

Nope - quite happy

I’ll play.

The goal is always the same before the gun goes off. To win. This weekend I did. (I usually don’t)

Congrats and thanks for sharing!

  1. What race were you in and what were the important conditions that affected the race if any (weather, # of people, course, etc)?

Small local Sprint event here in NE Ohio on Saturday. It was forecasted to rain, which meant a lower turnout (less than 40) and it rained as promised. Still a fun event–and it was in my town, so commute was super easy. This was my 4th Tri since switching from just running.

  1. What was your goal going into the race, how did the race go?

This was the third of four events that this group holds–I was 6th and 4th overall at the past two events, so I was hoping to move up more–this goal was made a little more pressing when I ditched my trusty road bike last week and got a real bike. Now I have to do better.

2nd out of the water–but passed in the run up to T1. Passed the first swimmer in Transition…so in second leaving T1. Got on the bike and reeled in the other guy and passed him around mile 3. Put about 2 minutes on him on the 12 mile bike–averaged 23.something for 12 miles and started on the run. Legs felt different after a hard push on a Tri bike (vs Road) but quickly settled into a 6:30/m pace. Unfortunately, the other guy was averaging a bit faster and got past me with a mile to go, finishing about 55 seconds ahead of me. So…second overall, first in AG.

  1. What did you do best in the race?

I think I put down a solid performance on the bike in the rain. There was a series of pretty slippery turns at both ends of the bike loops (more than just two 180s–we circled through a subdivision) so I’m pretty happy with the switch to something more aero.

  1. What mistake did you make and how did you learn from it?

I need to learn how to transition better. The first place guy had 35 seconds on me in transition. Getting off the bike and into running shoes is something I need to practice.

  1. Did any equipment you use work out really well or fail you?

Hooray for new bikes. I cobbled together a BTA and the bite valve I used fell off within a mile of the start. Wasn’t a big deal. Also, sunglass suck when it’s raining.

  1. Upon reflecting on the race, how does it shape your training or strategy for your next race?

Since I’m seeing incremental gains with each event, I’m going to continue my relatively painless "fit in workouts on a rotating basis whenever I can’ plan. I’ve got another sprint in two weeks, but also an Olympic in a month, so I’ll work in some longer rides than my normal 10-15 that I can do at lunch.

  1. Anything that you want to ask the ST community about regarding your race?

I brought it up in the other thread…are there any special practices for riding in the rain? Lower tire pressure? raise tire pressure? Don’t be stupid?

I like this idea. I’ll use my most recent race even though it wasn’t this past weekend

  1. What race were you in and what were the important conditions that affected the race if any (weather, # of people, course, etc)?
Rev3 Williamsburg Half. Weather was warm especially on the run so that played a factor.

  2. What was your goal going into the race, how did the race go?
Goal was to PR at half distance by a significant amount. My first year with a coach and I’ve had a lot of PRs this year. I was hoping I would PR (individual leg wise) on bike and run. Bike is where I made that happen. 15 minutes better than any previous half distance bike leg. I bonked at mile 6 on the run so run ended up similar times to previous half distance runs. Overall I’d PRed by over 16 minutes.

  3. What did you do best in the race?
pacing on the bike. I actually backed off watts slightly on second half of bike since the run would be warm. my legs felt great coming off the bike. also staying cool on the run. I was making sure to grab ice and cold water at every aid station.

  4. What mistake did you make and how did you learn from it?
fueling on the bike. I did not drink anywhere near enough. I really need to drink on a schedule. drinking by thirst I just don’t drink enough.

  5. Did any equipment you use work out really well or fail you?
    everything worked out well

  6. Upon reflecting on the race, how does it shape your training or strategy for your next race?
working on my fueling during training to prep for my first IM
