I have the standard compact crank 110bcd FSA Gossamer (50/34)with a FSA Mega Exo that came with the bike originally,
I’d like to switch to a standard crankset (130bcd) and my friend has an Ultegra 6700 (53/39) that he was going to give me.
What do I need to do? Will my Mega Exo work with it? If not, what do I need to buy?
So long as the crankset is compatible with FSA MegaExo bottom brackets the BCD doesn’t matter. BCD only matters when swapping chain rings not complete crankset. Unless it’s a BB30 crankset it will be a 24mm spindle so the diameter isn’t an issue but the width of the spindle. I’d just try it out and if it doesn’t work for you give it back. If you aren’t comfortable or don’t have the ability to remove your crankset take it to a bike shop and they should be able to do it within 10-15 minutes once it’s your turn
If it’s a 24mm spindle there is likely a way. You could be lucky and it fits in directly or you may need shims and adapters to get the job done fully. You can’t fit a 30mm spindle into a 24mm BB but you can do the opposite with adapters. There is more than 1 model of Ultegra 6700 cranks so it’s not possible to answer you with 100% certainty without all the details.
Why worry about trying to make a Shimano crankset work with the FSA bottom bracket you have in the frame? Just buy the Shimano bottom bracket. Should only set you back about $20 to $25.
The FSA bottom bracket won’t work. You’ll need a Shimano bottom bracket to go with the Ultegra crankset. Good news is they’re incredibly cheap, and last forever.
