Honeymoon Ideas (1)

So the little lady and i are tying the knot next august and i’ve been tasked w/ arranging the honeymoon. We are both active and the thought of spending the entire time lying on the beach is not really appealing although we’d like the option to relax if we so choose…so we’d like to tie the trip into some sort of activity. We have pretty wide interests (skiing/snowboarding, surfing, diving, mounting biking, road biking, climbing, kayaking, hiking, etc.). due to our jobs it will be tough to take more than 1 week and the adjoining weekends off so we dont want to spend too much time in transit or hopping between destinations. any suggestions? thanks in advance

Greece. You’re welcome.

When?

late august 2012.

backroads tours.

We went skiing in Valle Nevado, Chile. Awesome. Not sure what the exchange rate is now, but it was tasty 10 years ago.

In no particular order:

France / Switzerland - the Alps - Zermatt, St Moritz, Chamonix - loads of biking, climbing, walking and Cham’s awesome in the summer - but very much “not a beach” holiday

Maldives - Diving

Redsea - Diving

Barcelona / Catelonia - city, beaches, mountains, biking etc

Italy - Split Rome (ance) with Lake Garda and you have the best of both worlds (I’d actually split Paris with Chamonix as they are ~4 hours apart by TGV and local train)

South Africa - All of the above

If you are talking >10 days (friday night to following sunday return) then 7-10 hours travel time is probably ok.

SA is probably at the limit of that depending on where you are in the US

Obviously you have all of the Caribean, Hawaii and central America as well within that time zone but I’d not get to hung up about the flying / travel time, I usually do one long haul every 3-4 weeks for 2-3 days and its not a problem if you simply prepare well for it and it does not need to impact you at the arrival end.

If you like low key, off the beaten path, try Bonaire. Kite surfing, wind surfing, a TON of diving, hiking.

What is all this sporting stuff have to do with naked time? They should be fucking, sleeping or eating and that is all.

That’s no good for facebook updates.

You know that is what needs to be done on the honeymoon because after they get back the honeymoon will be over and real life will come screaming back at them. They need a little time to be totally disgusting and lustful about each other.

dont disagree - they referenced it though

Could just go to the maldives / Carribean or HA and do exactly what you suggest
.

Go to Hawaii.

Maui if you want a little more to do, Kauai if you want natural beauty and a quieter scene.

I would go to an all-inclusive resort that has lots of activities such as snorkeling, wind surfing, surfing, mountain biking, etc. After the craziness of the wedding prep and the actual wedding, you’re not going to want to go on a trip that involves much thinking. You’re going to want to stay in one place and just relax. Going to an all-inclusive will allow you to not have to worry about anything, while still having stuff for you to do other than sit on a beach. There’s a Hilton in Costa Rica that looks pretty good. Lots of active options there. That would be my pick, if I had to do it all over again.

Caneel Bay, St. John, USVI. Get a room on the beach.

This. My wife and I also aren’t the types to lay around so we initially scoffed at the idea of an all-inclusive, thinking we were too adventurous for that type of thing. We were both in full-on training/racing mode when we got married. Add the stress and activity of the wedding and we wound up very happy that we chose an all-inclusive. It was very easy to do absolutely nothing or pack your day full of activities. We pretty much wound up laughing at all of the people who were there for “exercise” and activity, while we layed on the beach and stared at the ocean for seven days straight. Consider it, it was wonderful.

X3. We just took our bikes out to Block Island off season (end of September). Between some time at the beach, sleeping a ton, riding, exploring, hot-tubbing (we had one in our room overlooking the ocean) and drinking too much with the locals every night, that was about all we could handle. An all inclusive, however, would be my pick too if I had to do it all over again.

we did valle nevado last summer…awesome experience! except for that damn waiter at the french restaurant…what an a-hole. its not as great as the big resorts out west but there is something about skiing in august that is just incredible.

we are definitely going again in the next couple years but i think we’re looking do do something new for the honeymoon.

lots of great ideas here guys, thanks a lot for all the help.

Costa Rica sounds like possibly a good option…diving, surfing, hiking, plus plenty of opportunities for doing nothing and laying on the beach. any other specific resorts the commentariat would recommend
