Honey Stinger Product Review

I picked up some Honey Stinger products so I thought I would do a review for those who haven’t tried or herd of them.

As a preface I had just adjusted my drop to get more aero and get used to it in the off season; so digestion would be more difficult.

In the past I used e-load gels and would get the digestion burps. Today I rode 2.5 hours on the computrainer to an Erg Video. The ride was more of a tempo ride and I was riding at 7am so at 6am I had some toast and nutella, an egg, and OJ. The ride was followed up with a 5km run,

About 50 min in I started to get hungry so I grabbed a Honey Stinger Waffle. It first in the side pocket of my Pearl Izumi tank.

The taste:

I was really impressed with the taste, a nice hint of honey and it wasn’t chaulky at all.

Texture:

Was nice and soft, it was probably warmed up from my body heat. I was expecting the crunch of a waffle cone but was pleasantly surprised (think softness of a nutrigrain bar).

Digestion:

I didn’t have any troubles digesting it. My hunger quickly subsided and did feel a boost of energy.

Things I would change:

The packing feels like the new biodegradable packing but it was difficult to open in the aero position. I ended up sitting up to open the package. There is no easy tear slit so next time I will just cut a small slit for easier opening.

With 45 min to go in the ride I took a Honey Stinger Gel with Ginseng.

Taste:

This gel reminded me of when I was in elementary school and when I got home I used to have a spoonful of honey. It was a nice taste of honey followed by the taste of Ginseng. I was told that when I got the gel that it was the least popular of the 2 Honey Stinger flavours but I really liked it.

Texture:

It literally felt like honey in my mouth but was very easy to swallow. With e-load I would take some gel then some water, that wasn’t the case with the Honey Stinger.

Digestion:

I didn’t get the burps like I had with the e-load and I felt really good on the run. I also didn’t feel hungry after the workout so I am going to say that the gel performed much better for me, than e-load.

Overall I was very happy with Honey Stinger. Between Infinit in my bottles and Honey Stinger my nutrition is set for the upcoming season. The only thing I would change is the packaging on the waffle.

o…m…g. Honey Stinger Waffles are the tastiest things on the market right now, whether during a workout or just for a snack. We call em Honey Stinger EPO Waffles because they have a certain athlete on the wrapper. =)

Is that supposed to be in pink font?

If you’re serious about the taste its funny I rode with 6 guys this morning and they all wanted to buy some after trying them.

Yes I am serious. They taste like a party in my mouth.

Love the Honey Stinger waffles. Delicious taste and great texture. Packaging indeed too difficult to open and with winter gloves virtually impossible. Thus I open them before a ride.

They said they’re fixing the package issue (from their twitter: You spoke and we listened. Waffles are back in stock and now feature a wrapper that is easier to open!). I do agree with the taste, they’re excellent.

OK so I am glad they are a blasty blast for you.

Why not just use honey as a gel? I know gels have extra stuff, but does a little ginseng or vitamin E or some electrolytes make a difference? Or does a mixture of different kind of sugars stagger the release of carbohydrates in a way that measurably improves performance? Just wondering.

The waffles are delicious. I absolutely love them, they are great on long rides instead of gel after gel, but my favorite time is when I get home from work. I’m usually starving before my night workout, a waffle is just enough to take the edge off the hunger and give me a nice boost.

I wonder though if they couldn’t get just a bit of protein in them.

After tasting them I was wondering if they are just re-labeling mcdonalds honey packets

I don’t know if ‘a little ginseng’ makes a difference but I can tell you that a LOT of ginseng makes a HUGE difference. Back in the day when I would work construction for 9 hours, go to the gym for another 2, then go party until 5am and then not get to sleep until 10am it was all cause of these babies.

I give these honey stinger products two thumbs up for taste and ease of digestion as well. I didn’t discover them until my 2nd to last week of IM training. I am going to go w/these for my next race training…

you can probably guess my opinion about Honey Stinger.
Glad you all like the stuff. Try the energy bars too. the peanut butter and rocket chocolate are solid.

I bought two boxes of the Honey Stinger protein bars from Steep & Cheap having never tried them. I was pleasantly surprised and they taste excellent (dark chocolate coconut almond and chocolate coated peanut butta). The honey taste is there, but not overwhelming. I’ll definitely try some of their gels.
